It is metal. The egg however is microwave safe but you have to purchase the eggs from a grocery store. :-) **Q: Will it work for quail eggs?** A: No, the diameter is too wide. I used it crack open my 3 minute hard boiled egg and found the opening this gadget created is a little too small for my porcelain, 3 minute egg spoon. Otherwise, it works as specified. I found I put a little more "mmph" while using the gadget, which doesn't make for a full, circle crack on the egg. So, I moved the gadget around the egg and repeated the steps to crack and it worked. Would I recommend?
