Whats the benefit of an external preamp if the tt i am considering already has a built in phono preamp? the signal to noise ratio is 55db i believe.

It's completely redundant and unnecessary unless quality of sound is your concern. In theory, an high-quality external phono preamp will sound better -- or even much better -- than the cheap one built into your turntable. But everything varies, and since this preamp costs like 1% of a the cost of a serious high-end phono preamp, it's possibly no better than the one that's built-in. Also, your turntable *must* have a switch to bypass its internal preamp, or else you won't be able to use an external one at all (you can't feed a phono preamp into another phono preamp).

What advantage does the 1000ma ac adaptor have vs. the less expensive 500ma version?

It's commonly held among audiophiles that almost any amplifier can be made to sound better if more and cleaner current can be made available by up-sizing the power supply. This SMPS regulated adaptor can supply twice the current our standard one provides.

Does this filter out under 20Hz (could be a band-pass for 20Hz-20kHz)?

Frequency response drops off sharply below 20Hz; down 10dB at 10Hz. 20dB at 6Hz.

Lovin great sound!

Need a good but not an eccentric cost of of a preamp. I’m not an audiophile, but still enjoy affordable quality. They have a great warranty , do the job, and a good output. I don’t have an O scope to measure output, but my ears say the out is working great. Some complained about the red LED...so what. My preamp is connected to amplifier, and comes on/off with amplifier. My Audio technica turntable, Yamaha amp, T50 Polk speakers, this preamp, Sound great, and together under $800.

I'm surprised by negative reviews...

I was actually trying to find another preamp for my bedroom. I had purchased mine probably six years ago off the internet and never dreamed I'd find it on Amazon. I have been extremely pleased with the quality sound I've enjoyed since I bought it. Very musical, 3-D imaging and a quiet, wide panorama of sound. Recently got the bug to "upgrade" and purchased a Project Audio Box DC. It came yesterday and I was so disappointed! Very little bass,. screechy highs and an image that was skewed to the left. Overall, it sounded dead. Boxed it back up and will return it tomorrow. In the meantime, I wanted to check out another TCC. Honestly, I am super critical and I have loved this unit. It makes my Klipsch speakers sing. Another friend told me that he couldn't believe he was listening to a mechanical sound reproduction. I'm sold and happy with mine. Hope you guys didn't get bad units, because I will be ordering another. Good luck!

I bought this preamp back in 2016 and it worked adequately until 2 months ago when it began to produce a hum in my vinyl rips to CDR
