Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Film Collection (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf 2-Disc Special Edition / The Comedians / The Sandpiper / The V.I.P.s) 5 Disc Set

I was most looking forward to Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Does not contain Taming of the Screw or other Taylor Burton films.

Here's an interesting, long-overdue batch of films from the First Couple of Whatever. Any fan or film student will want to add these 4 titles to their collection--sort of.WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?: Definitely their best--and one of the best, period. Mike Nichols's film of Edward Albee's landmark play is awesome, start to finish, with four of the finest performances you'll ever see. The ladies both won Oscars, but the men deserved them, too.THE COMEDIANS: Graham Greene in the Caribbean, and an interesting tale of political hugger-mugger. Look for early performances by James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, and Gloria Foster. And Alec Guiness and Peter Ustinov, who are great in anything.THE V.I.P.s: Absolutely. Classy, all-star soap written by Terence Rattigan (SEPARATE TABLES) that is stolen from the glamorous leads--not by bombastic Orson Welles or even Oscar-winner Margaret Rutherford, but by a young, intense, surprisingly beautiful British girl named Maggie Smith in one of her most touching performances.And then there's THE SANDPIPER, and all I can say is...not so much. I never warmed up to this Vincente Minnelli oddity, mainly because the two lead characters (Liz and Dick, natch) are so off-putting. Poor Eva Marie Saint! And what's up with Charles Bronson's character? Is he gay, or what? Throw in that crashing, insistent, Oscar-winning theme song ("The Shadow of Your Smile"), and the result is almost surrealistic. It's a mess, but a fascinating one--kind of like a train wreck with nice clothes.All in all, these 4 films show us the power couple at work together--and what a team they were! At their best or at their worst, they were unforgettable.

I can hardly say enough good about this boxed set -- there's not a clinker in the bunch. My two personal favorites are The V.I.P.s and The Comedians. The latter was Graham Greene's Opus magnus and Burton and Taylor pull it off with brilliance, finesse, and pure craft excellence. The story is generally about Papa Doc's reign of terror in Haiti (Burton owns a hotel there) and Taylor is an ambassador's wife whom, of course, has a torrid, running affair with Burton. There's a lot of action in this film, more than I ever expected. Honestly, I really love this film and watch it frequently.The V.I.P.s is bulging with major stars of the period, including Orson Wells, and the story is a good one -- Burton is a multi-millionaire whose wife (Taylor) is leaving him for a well-known gigilo.... sort of. Through a comedy of errors, Burton discovers his wife's treachery at the last minute before she can leave England and tries to win her back, at the airport and at a nearby hotel, (they get fogged in), over the next 12 hours. The viewer really cannot anticipate what is going to happen from one moment to the next. The cinematography is especially impressive and the numerous sub-plots are both amusing and dramatic. One of the most satisfying films I've ever seen, reminicent of "Hotel".I won't dwell on the remaining films of the set except to say that they're equally fine movies. These films represent some of Hollywood's finest moments. I cannot recommend the set highly enough, especially for hard-core film buffs.

This is an excellent collection of movies and truly wonderful for me as I believe I am Elizabeth Taylor's biggest fan. However, even if you're not a huge fan of Elizabeth and/or Richard Burton. Who's Afraid of Virginian Woolf is an amazing film directed by the then up and coming director Mike Nichols. Under his direction, Elizabeth and Richard both give arguably the best performances of their storied careers.The other films included in this multi-disc set are uneven but have some great moments and are very interesting in a lot of ways even though they might not be the height of Hollywood filmmaking. However, for Taylor/Burton fans this set is worth getting because this is seeing Elizabeth and Richard at the height of their fame in some very interesting films that seemed to mirror things happening in their real lives - which adds to the fascination of the Taylor/Burton relationship and how everything got translated to the screen during that time. Bottom line - if you're a big Taylor/Burton fan, this is a must. If you just like interesting films which can range from funny to campy, this is also worth getting for it's entertainment value.

In the collection of four films is a difficult to find treasure called Storm Warning starring Ronald Reagan, Ginger Rogers, Doris Day and Steve Cochrane. Excellent value. This was a surprise gift for my niece Patricia who had searched for this classic film drama for months.

The four movies contained are an excellent contrast of the Burtons in their hayday,looking fab and the acting is pretty good too. Very difficult to get your hands on these so its a great collection for the fan of these two super stars/actors.

have only watched the two doris day DVD and both are perfect

Die Bildqualität der DVD ist durchgehend sehr gut, die Tonqualität ist jedoch nur zufriedenstellend, da die Tonspur in Englisch ab der Hälfte des Films sehr schwach ist. Je nach DVD-Player oder Lapptop kann das über die Lautstärkeregulung ausgeglichen werden. Die Tonspuren in Deutsch und Spanisch sind durchgehend sehr gut. Die Untertitel in den verschiedenen Sprachen - engl., dt., spanisch, etc. - sind ebenfals sehr gut, auch die Synchronisation ist sauber und gelungen.Die Handlung des Films, die auf dem Roman "The Comedians" von Graham Greene basiert, weicht stark von der des Buches ab. Der Autor Graham Greene hat am Drehbuch mitgewirkt, die Drehorte des Films - was man u.a. auch in dem sehr sehenswerten Special auf der DVD erfährt - sind Dahomey (ehemalige französische Kolonie, seit 1975 der Staat Benin in Westafrika), die franzöische Riveria und die Studios in Paris.Die Haupt- und Nebenrollen sind hervorragend besetzt, vor allem Richard Burton ist hervorragend als Brown, entwurzelter Hotelbesitzer und eifersüchtig Liebender und einer der wenigen Realisten in der Riege der Komödianten. Alle Darsteller verkörpern ihre Rollen durchweg glaubwürdig, neben Richard Burton sind es vor allem die weiblichen Darsteller, Liz Taylor als Browns Geliebte Martha und vor allem auch Lillian Gish, die in ihrer Verkörperung der resoluten und zugleich naiven Amerikanerin Mrs. Smith mit wenigen Mitteln Grundsätzliches und tiefe Gefühle zu vermitteln vermag.Wer akzeptiert, dass die Handlung im Film eine andere ist als die des Buches - starke Kürzungen, vor allem das Ende des Films weicht stark ab, der findet in diesem Film eine geglückte und atmosphärisch überaus dichte Adaption von Greenes Roman. Das Terrorregime von "Papa Doc" im Haiti der 1960er wird eindringlich (nie aufdringlich) gezeigt, gleichzeitig steht es stellvertretend für die Gesetzmäßigkeit eines Terrorregimes als solches. Der Film ist an vielen Stellen von großer Symbolkraft, gerade auch in den kleinen Szenen.Hintergrundwissen zu Haiti und seiner leid- und wechselvollen Geschichte und die Kenntnis von Greenes Roman helfen sicher, den Film besser einordnen und verstehen zu können, aber die Bilder sprechen für sich, vor allem die der Gewalt und der inneren Angst. Der Regisseur Peter Glenville schafft es, die Handlungsstränge und Verwicklungen durch intelligente Schnitte und Übergänge schnell klarzumachen.Die Bilder der Angst überschatten die oft subtile Komik, die den ganzen Film durchzieht und kommentiert - nach dem (abgründigen) Motto: Wenn schon alles verloren ist, so bleibt als letzer Ausweg noch das Lachen. Bisweilen gehen köstlich komische Szenen fast etwas unter, da die Grundstimmung so bedrückend ist.Aber wenn Paul Ford als pazifistischer Vegetarier Mr. Smith sich nach einem Bad in Browns Hotelswimmingpool mühselig die nassen Badeshorts auszieht, so erinnert das fast an Mr. Bean, und auch Alec Guinnes siedelt seinen Jones so haarsträubend zwischen abgründig-liebenswerter Komik und unverbesserlicher und abstoßender Hochstapelei an, dass man oft nicht weiß, ob man lachen oder weinen soll.  Die Stunde der Komödianten Insgesamt ist "Die Stunde der Komödianten" ein sehr gelungener und sehenswerter Film, manche Szenen sind jedoch nichts für schwache Nerven.  Die Stunde der KomödiantenDie Stunde der KomödiantenDie Stunde der Komödianten
