A great feat of determination and good will
It's a great story and a great film - for people with determination to help their fellow humans, this film is a story of a person going to the ends of the earth to reduce human suffering. It is also a great story on many other fronts, with love, humour, mystery and not a single scene which has not been carefully considered and excellently portrayed. I have not read the book, but id I were an aspiring physician I would definitely read the book. My feeling is this is a great film for anyone who would like to beconme a doctor or nurse. It's also a lovely story.

Wonderful film but not quite history
A wonderful film exploring the development of medieval medicine in an age of religious intolerance. Although it centres on an English student, the real hero in history is Ibn Sina 9Avicenna) who was the Medieval World's greatest doctor.Unfortunately, the film takes a lot of artistic redirection. As far as I'm aware Ibn Sina never treated the black death, and Isfahan was not overrun by the Seljuks until after his death.

The fall of Isfahan
Incredible film transfixed from beginning to end. Commanding performance by an incredibly talented caste, from start to finish. I shan't elaborate on the content, it worth watching and any anomalies I suggest you undertake some research in Persian and Arab history of the time. NOT THE WESTERN INTERPRETATION!!

Long and not historically accurate but a great yarn
I settled in to watch this on a dull and dreary winter afternoon and with a running time just over two and a half hours, it passed quickly. I was soon enveloped in a medieval tale which starts in medieval London and moves across Europe to Persia. In essence, it’s the story of a young British boy who joins a travelling showman/ barber with a few medical ‘spells’. Boy yearns to learn real skills and ends up travelling to Ishphahan, a seat of learning and knowledge. There are numerous threads to the story; the gulf of knowledge between West and East, religious differences, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, medical learning, witchcraft, war, a bit of romance and much more. It’s a really well produced period drama. A lot of variety in location with strong scenes set in medieval towns and homes. It’s well plotted and kept my attention throughout. Recommended.

intriguing film
Beautiful scenery, even if it was a little odd at the beginning, the people seemed as though they were animation. But after it got going it was a good story line that will hold your attention, with a strong cast of actors. Definitely worth watching.

Very good production
The plot is very well written. It is based on Noah Gordon's book with some changes, but I really enjoyed this movie. It is on my top 5.

Buy it from Amazon. You'll never see it on Netflix.
The virtually unknown movie of the "much beloved" book. The story follows an idealistic young man with a passion for healing from the crude surgeries and medicine shows of medieval England to Persia where almost-modern medicine was being born, midwifed by the Persian genius Ibn Sina. Like Game of Thrones, this is a big, entertaining epic of an exotic time and place. The Physician has less sex, violence, and characters than GoT, but has more real history and geography as a reward. Yes, the bubonic plague is an anachronism, but the guy gets the girl, and dramatic and the historic cooperate for a satisfying entertainment that makes you want to read Noah Gordon's book and maybe The Lost Enlightenment.Enjoy.
