Sharp and High Quality.
I don't know what others received. The tool I got was extremely sharp. I would cut my finger or gouge off some skin if I was not careful. Excellent product, just what I needed. Metal ring at end to reinforce for hitting with a mallet.

Shallow sweep, but my #1 gouge for hardwood
I just started hand carving bowls after a tornado left me plenty of scrap wood to play with. I don't have a huge array of carving tools to compare this to, but I find myself reaching for it above all others. The sweep is shallow, but it is very sharp and stays sharp. I have been using it with a plastic mallet and by hand pressure alone to remove the bulk of material from inside odd-shaped bowls, especially hardwoods that the Beavercraft tools don't cut very well. I find it shaves wood well at any angle in relation to the grain. And because I'm new to the craft, the shallow sweep is very forgiving and keeps me from cutting too deep or tearing out too much material. I haven't tried sharpening it yet. I would definitely buy this gouge again.

came chipped
not sharp at all, had chips in the gouge, will take hours of work to fix

I would buy this tool again , but expect to do some tuning to get it where you want.
Basically a decent gouge although not very sharp upon arrival , spent a good amount of time getting it into working condition. The ferrule on the butt of the handle was a pretty rough fit with a sharp edge that made it uncomfortable to use , after working on it with a file and Emory cloth it is much nicer to use. Now works well as it should and without discomfort.

Excellent quality for the money, very fast service!
Excellent quality for the money, very fast service! Using this gouge for spoon bowls, making spoons from dry wood. I Have carved three spoons with it so far and the edge is holding up well.

Buy both sizes.3/4" and 1'.You will need both.
i believe the 3/4" and the 1'' are basic tools that are necessary for wood sculpting.i am very happy with all aspects of the tool.i recommend both sizes for basic wood removal and shaping. They are excellent tools.

Sharp
Very pleased. Mine was very sharp out the box and easily capable of gouging older wood, and goes through green wood like butter. Only issue I have is the fairly rough flat-topped handle which gave me a blister after two days use. Will do something to modify this.
