Is this a chinese knockoff of lego?

It's not made by Lego but it's only the light kit to use with the set.

What type of battery needed?

You will need two CR2032 batteries. I did find it to go through batteries quickly. The lighting kit comes with a USB cord also so I plug it into my power bank and I don't need to worry about batteries.

Are the character figures included?

This is the lighting only for the Lego kit. You must purchase the Lego kit separately. Big Bang Theory characters are included in the Lego kit.
