## Description

This sale is for one of the pots containing 3 mature lithops in the picture. Lithops is a genus of succulent plants native to southern Africa. "Lithos" means "stone" and "-ops" means "face" in Ancient Greek; therefore "Lithops" means "stone-like". This is a very good description of these plants, which avoid being eaten by blending in with surrounding rocks. They are often known as pebble plants or living stones. The formation of the name from the Greek "-ops" means that even a single plant is called a Lithops. Individual Lithops plants consist of one or more pairs of bulbous, almost fused leaves opposite to each other and hardly any stem. The slit between the leaves contains the meristem and produces flowers and new leaves. The leaves of Lithops are mostly buried below the surface of the soil, with a partially or completely translucent top surface or window allowing light to enter the interior of the leaves for photosynthesis. During winter a new leaf pair, or occasionally more than one, grows inside the existing fused leaf pair. In spring the old leaf pair parts to reveal the new leaves and the old leaves will then dry up. Lithops leaves may shrink and disappear below ground level during drought. Lithops in habitat almost never have more than one leaf pair per head, the environment is just too arid to support this. Yellow or white flowers emerge from the fissure between the leaves after the new leaf pair has fully matured, one per leaf pair. This is usually in autumn, but can be before the summer equinox in L. pseudotruncatella and after the winter equinox in L. optica. The flowers are often sweetly scented. The most startling adaptation of Lithops is the colouring of the leaves. The leaves are not green as in almost all higher plants, but various shades of cream, grey, and brown, patterned with darker windowed areas, dots, and red lines. The markings on the top surface disguise the plant in its surroundings.

    Fat little Lithops

*by P***G on Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2012*

I ordered a few sets (three come per set) on May 10, 2012 and received them nine days later on May 19. They came secured in a box with foam peanuts for protection, with the top of the plastic pots sealed tight with tape and cotton. There are 3 lithops planted in a soil mix in a 4 inch plastic round container, with each container topped with little stones. All are healthy and fat looking on top and their root systems are fine too. These are interesting looking fat little things. The lithops have little markings on top and include the following colors: brown, light cream, and green. The three lithops look small in their 4 inch plastic pots, so I repotted them into clay pots. They do kind of look like little brains or little rear ends. You could disguise them with stones and pebbles or let them stand out with just soil around the plants. In their natural habitat in South Africa and other parts of southern Africa, their tops face the sun, and most of the rest of the plant is buried. In pots, you may plant a little higher. I replanted mine higher and I wonder if allowing more of the plant to be exposed means that the plant needs a little less sun.General guidelinesDuring the longer days in the northern states, you are supposed to give them about 3 or 4 hours of sun, which may be lightly filtered with a screen. A southern exposure is fine, followed by an eastern location. A western location is a bit hot and strong, possibly needing a little light shade. And a northern exposure's lighting is inadequate. (I am not sure if my location has that much light, but they are getting what sun and bright light is available from the porch).Avoid overwatering and amend the cactus mix with more perlite or other material to encourage better drainage and faster drying of the soil. Faster drying clay pots are preferable over plastic pots.WinterOld leaves shrivel and new ones emerge. Water lightly or not at all.SpringNew leaves absorb the water and nutrients from the old leaves. Water slightly more. Let soil dry a few days before watering again. If the soil becomes bone dry for a very long time, roots may die. But, it's still better to underwater, rather than overwater. If they haven't had sun for a while, gently and gradually expose them to stronger light and sun to avoid sunburn which causes white spots on the plants. One of my lithops got too much sun and each side of the plant had sunburnt white patches. Then, I possibly overwatered and both leaves burst.SummerGrowth stops. Let plants rest. Water lightly or not at all.FallFlower buds appear in late Summer and Fall. Water slightly more.Different types of lithops may have a time schedule which differs from the above general guidelines.

    3 small lithops

*by M***6 on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2014*

i received 3 lithops in a 3 seperate 2" pots. lithops were in a good condition however it was relatively in a small size ( seedlings maybe), or it is suppose to be like that i don't know. i asked seller to send me 3 different variety and i'm glad that i received brown, green and purple/yellow ones. I repotted and not watered them yet. i give a 4 star due to the size. Uploaded the picture of the lithops that i've received.
