Its scary sharp outta the box, but it's hard steel will take and hold a steeper edge with ease, you just have to be sure to take care of your knives properly. But i don't honestly see anyone in their right mind spending this much on a knife and mistreating it. Anywho, the knife is a very beautiful, well made tool. You can spend hours just staring at it. The Damascus look is great, and does a very good job at hiding some scratches (in case u get is scratched). The balance is spot on, and the over sized handle is the best i've seen and felt, really. The pakawood is really beautiful. It's a knife with its own personality that (i bet) will last a life time. If it's in ur budget, buy it, its a no brainer. I own wusthof and global knives, the handling and looks of this Mac is head and shoulders above 'em. I still love my globals and wusthofs, don't get me wrong, but this is knife is in another league. And just a little side note, i have contacted Mac USA a few times (email and phone) to get their advice on a few things and each time i've gotten fast and great response. So its good to know that ur product its well backed up.
