    Ii is too long.

The novel, historical to some degree, consists of three parts.  The second one, in my opinion, is optional reading if one wants to follow the narrative thread.  The third part is the continuation of the first one.  I found the middle part too long and disruptive even though it explains, out of sequence, events not included in the first and third parts.

We all have limited time to read and, therefore, when I read I hope to either learn something (as from history or current affairs books) or to be engrossed in a magnificent tale written in at least good prose. I am sorry to say that this book accomplished neither goal for me.I chose this book because I do like to read a couple of books a year in their original Spanish language and I had seen an article in the NY Times about today's most influential Hispanic and Latin American writers. Even though the author has been dead for some time, he made the list and I decided to give him a try.This book came out in the late 1990s and perhaps it is a case of it's not aging well. More likely, I think it may have been celebrated and lauded by those who are still searching for the true soul of Hispanic/Latin literature. Whatever the reasons, I did not like it. I learned nothing from this book. I didn't enjoy the writing for the most part...certainly not 600 pages of meandering without a real---or at least compelling---point. And all this by characters that I generally disliked. Hippie culture is not something I ever felt much regard for and 600 hundred pages of their doings was more than I was willing to take.In addition, I feel the author often comes across as sanctimonious and in many passages just trying to show us how much he knows. I wanted to put the book down for good, but I have a policy of finishing every book I start, so I trudged on, hoping it would get better. It did not.One good thing comes out of this: I will not be reading his supposed classic, "2666." I know I don't care for Bolano as an author, so now I feel free to search for other modern Hispanic/Latin authors to enjoy.
