An amazing book
This book is a beautiful story of a girl who has a fathera mother and a little sister. Her father does not make enough money from his job so the family was on the verge of bankruptcy. Naima is wanted to help but because women could not work and she was not born a boy. Therefore she couldn’t help her tired father. This girl is the best aplana painter in her village but aplana painting was not going to give her family money. Her father drives rickshaws and gives people rides in exchange for money sometimes. Rich people come in the rickshaw and if it’s clean and fancy the will give extra money. Naima just wishes she can overflow her family with riches so her and her best friend-boy Salim make a plan she asks him for his clothes changes into them while her father was out her mother and sister were asleep and she went out to find a job and make money. A beautiful and moving read.

Great Read!
This is a wonderful book that my 9 year old daughter and I both read at the same time. The details are phenomenal and really paint a vivid picture in your head of what is happening in the book. We both enjoyed the sweet story. I look forward to reading more from Mitali Perkins!

The characters are engaging and easy to like
This book gently introduces kids to gender inequalities in some parts of the world. The characters are engaging and easy to like. At the same time, the problems they encounter provoke the reader into thinking about how girls are treated and how they SHOULD be treated. I'm looking forward to reading it to my students and getting their reaction.

This book is a great early reader
This book is a great early reader. I am an elementary school librarian and I'm always looking for books that expose my students to cultures around the world. The book is not long and tell the story of a young girl that wants to help her family financially. She uses her talents to find a way to accomplish that. The book would also be a great read aloud for grades 2-3. Great descriptions and character development for such a short book.

Fun, engaging and heart warming
This is a fun and engaging story. Your kids will love it.You might love it, too. This is a subtle and heart warming story of women's empowerment. Without an angry word, or a whiff of ideology, this story tells what poor families can do by enlisting the gifts of all their members. These women don't wait for someone to act for them, but take risks. And everyone wins--there is no zero sum game here. But my imagination is soaring--this is a kid's story, and you'll just have to enjoy it on that level!

I buy this book for every little girl I know
Every little girl should read this book or have it read to them. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is really empowering. I think I've bought this book at least 5 times, and give it out to my friends' daughters when they are old enough to start understanding the story. It's also a wonderful way for children to learn about a culture outside of the US (or wherever you live).

Great book for a younger KS2 class
Good story that inspires artwork and writing. My class are getting lots of information about the life of Naima and the issues facing her. Have found this useful for explanations, stories from other cultures and debating issues. Great book - really recommend it.

Good book
I liked it but I got two instead of one copy but I think that's my assistants fault. The book is well illustrated a good read if you're bored Maima's story of how girls can't work is a ggod one. I recommend this book to anyone. It shows the struggle of a poor Bangali family. Even though they're just fiction there are people who live like Naima's family.
