Has he tried cleaning the machine filter? After every use you should take the filter out, rinse under clear water, wipe dry and replace it to its place. (The filter is a small rectangular little box inside the machine, it’s blue in colour) ,  if you press the two sides of the blue
little box and gently lift it out then clean it as explained above. To re place the little box back in the washer, gently insert the bottom of
the little box in place, you should hear a Click, make sure little blue box is closed (I am sure this gadget is a Fluff Catcher. I have had no
problems with fluff. (It’s easier to replace the box if you insert the bottom part at an angle and gently push the box into place).

Does it heat the water? If so what temperature range is available?

No, it’s doesn’t heat the water. You can add warm water up to 50°c yourself

Question 3

Which adaptor do I need to fit a small tap in a caravan? There doesn't appear to be a way to screw anything on to the tap

If you can't use a sink adaptor you can fill the tube manually...
Just select the water level on the machine and put the water in with a bowl... No hotter than 60 degree.... When the water level is right the machine is start to work.... 
Btw I think if you need adaptor is 2cm diameter... But it's depends on your tap.... Check out and measure the tap before you order
And the machine is NOT heating the water anyway...

Question 4

Does this washing machine need a plumbing connection? I want to use it in my student dormitory. Can I just plug it in and fill myself with water？

You can manually fill it using a jug or a bucket or whatever. It will switch on its inlet pump and it'll remain on until you've filled it to operational level, then the wash will start. Sometimes it'll stop again and you need to top it up. BUT you still need to have the outlet pipe running into a sink or a bath or some other place that will take the used water away. It pumps out quite fast so a small sink won't handle it. The standard wash cycle involves filling the machine with water three times, and it'll take you a while to do it manually because it needs quite a lot of water each time.
