No it does not have a light. But it is the best Walkman out there.

does this play cassettes

No it doesn't. Sony has labelled this "Walkman", but the name is a general term for Sony consumer product that are portable. This SRF59 is an earbuds/headphone only AM/FM stereo receiver.

I live in a rural area. What about FM reception?

FM reception depends on tower locations in a rural area. My husband says AM talk radio holds a better reception from building to building compared to FM reception. But in the open fields reception for both is about the same depending on radio towers in your area. I've been purchasing 2 sony walkmans a year for my husband these past 15 Christmases and he uses the radio everyday (10- 12 hrs daily) 7 days a week 365 days a year. It takes a licking & keeps on sounding Awesome! Enjoy!

Do you have to use headphones to listen .Can you just put it on a desk

You can only use radio with headphones, but the headphones work really well, loud n clear.
