UPDATE MAY 2019 - 5 STARS THIS TIME
UPDATE MAY 2019: OK, the Eureka is history and I bought yet another Simpli Stik in May of 2016, which is still running. Three years. That could be a record. It’s had a rough life, but everything works, even though I neglected emptying it out after every use and it fell over hundreds of times. It still works just fine. So why buy a new one? Well, when I read the features of this new one, I was drawn. Let’s face it, I was sold. Why? Simply put (pardon the pun): 1 - It really stands up by itself. Really and truly. No overbalancing to make it fall over and trip up the user, as the old one does. 2 - Disconnecting the bottom dust cup for emptying is easier, as the button works well, and it is easy to click back on, unlike the old one, which tends to fight you. 3 - The power of this unit is shocking on the first use. It is indeed powerful. To me, it felt a bit like the kick of the first gun you ever fired. Hang onto it. My cat hates it, because it makes a lot more noise than the old one. I guess she’ll get used to it. 4 - The suction picks up nearly everything it gets near, so be warned. (Paper Towel: now you see it, now you don't.) There's no going over and over a spot, making the task take too long, as the old one does. 5 - Removing the rod, to use as a hand-held, is not a life and death battle. The snap button works like a dream, and you don’t lose all kinds of time fighting with it, as with the old one. 6 - It doesn't have a terrible odor wafting off during operation, only as you'd expect from an electric motor. Not overpowering. Those are good selling points for a reasonably priced, well designed cheap vacuum. Just a few sore spots: 1 - It does make lots of noise. You can’t use it while anyone is sleeping. Trust me. 2 - The motor gets sorta hot in continuous use. Short breaks help. The strength of the motor would seem to be the likely reason. No smoke noticed yet. 3 - As others have said, the crevice tool, although it works very well, just won’t stay where the manufacturer planned for it to be kept. It falls. And falls. If anyone has come up with a way to keep it snapped onto the rod, please - PLEASE let me know. If I should think of something, I will try to pass on the idea here. Hmmm, maybe heavy duty velcro? Worth a shot. Pending..... OK, that’s it. Good little appliance. I like it a lot. And it didn’t break the bank. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx have a Eureka that I bought in 2011 that is still kicking. That makes it almost 6 years old. The crevice tool; is cracked and patched with duck tape. The top and bottom sections are held together by duck tape because the little snap thing wore out. It's noisier than the Dirt Devil. It's also heavier. But it works. Say no more. UPDATE MAY 2019: OK, the Eureka is history and I bought yet another Simpli Stik in May of 2016, which is still running. Three years. The Dirt Devil is so light I have no problem using it. It does indeed have a chemical odor emitting during use, as other posters have mentioned. I will off-gas in time. Meanwhile, I use with ventilation.

I LOVE this vac on so many levels I'm getting a second!!
This vac is so perfect for us. We needed a light weight and easy vac as we had just put wood floors down in 60% of the house and dragging the Dyson out with a floor attachment was driving me crazy several times a day. We got this one and it was light weight and easy to use, so much so my 5 and 4 year old insisted on giving it a try, since then they ask every day if they can tidy up the toys and vacuum the floor, of course I have no problem with this at all. In fact we are getting a second so that they can both have one and we don't have arguments over who gets to use it first. Even my 1 year old loves to bring it out and try and tidy up. We vacuum at least once a day as a lot of dirt gets tracked in and I think my husband and I have only had to use it about 5 times in the last month, every time I get it out to use it my kids come running in and ask to use it instead, we have had to divide the house so one gets to do the living room and hallway and the other gets to do the kitchen, the added bonus is they pick everything up and tidy up all the toys and anything else before they can start!!! It picks up great, we have kittens who make a mess outside their litter box with walking bits of kitty litter out and it picks that up no problem, picks up dirt/mud, leaves, straw, any small items that have been tracked in from outside, dog and cat hair by the handfuls. Unlike other reviewers I have not had a problem with it clogging too fast, my long haired dog has been molting terribly and this picks it up fine, when I empty it the filter is covered in dog hair but I have not noticed any problems with suction. A down side I have found with it is the cord is too short, I can barely reach the other side of the room with it in a 19' room, I might have to eventually add to the cords but then I think it might not wrap up on the handle. The other problem came when I tried to vacuum up hair after I had cut my son's, it did seem to suck it up ok and then I noticed it was not working right on the regular stuff, it would keep leaving a little pile of dust when I turned it off, I turned it off and looked and the hair had got clumped and stuck in the floor attachment where it goes up into the machine. I tried to get it all out but due to the angle I ended up having to use a screwdriver and undo the 4 screws and take it apart to get the hair out then put it back together. This was very easy and only took about 10 mins to do but was a pain. Finally it does not do carpet very well at all. We got an area rug and it was able to pick up the dirt but not the hairs at all, not surprising as it has to bristles, I had to bring the Dyson out to clean that. Again it is a great little vacuum and probably about as expensive as the toy vacuums we were looking at for the kids but this one will actually keep your house clean.

Mediocre vacuum made good by its price.
I think this is a pretty good example of a four-star product. What makes it four-star you ask? That's actually a really easy question to answer: price. When we received this, I wasn't really sure what I expected out of $20 vacuum. My girlfriend had ordered it and kept telling me it has really good reviews, and it was only $20. I thought, $20? Sold! As long as it does a minimum of cleaning I'm cool with that. We received it from FedEx and it was literally in the dirt devil box. It looked thinner and smaller than what we had imagined, and when we took it out we realized it was basically a very cheap Dustbuster with a pole you could attach to it and an attachment to make it a floor cleaner. Underwhelming. But hey, does it clean? The answer to that question is: I guess so. It seemed to do just fine sucking up obvious stuff on top of the carpet, and I guess it sucks up some stuff on the wooden floors too. I didn't exactly go sprinkling coffee all over to experiment with, but overall it seems to do a decent job of picking stuff up. The negatives: this thing is like a toy vacuum. But seriously, you could get us to a little child so they could play house. I'm 6 foot and my girlfriend is 5 foot seven, and we both have to hunch over like the hunchback of Notre Dame in order to use it. Kind of killer on the back. I also don't really know how well the floor attachment works. It basically just goes into the Dustbuster hole, and it's supposed to make it suck up from the sides of the attachment too. I don't think it really does, so you're pretty much vacuuming the floor with a Dustbuster. Overall it's not a great vacuum, and I wouldn't use it for heavy-duty cleaning, but for our small apartment and for $20… Yeah I'm happy with it. Would I buy it again? If I was real tight on money, and I didn't feel I need to clean a ton of things, sure. If I wanted a vacuum that does a great job cleaning? Probably not. P. s. Real small rant about vacuums: The reason I am so truly impressed with this price is that if you look for "normal" vacuums, those prices are absurd? 100 dollars for a vacuum? No thanks! And many are much more than that! Is this technology THAT crazy? It sucks up dirt!

Works excellent for hard wood, tile or linoleum floors! lightweight, very easy to use- my broom is getting lonely
update Sept 2017 , this vacuum which is used almost every day is still going strong, 2 years after original purchase I actually just bought another to take to school and keep in the classroom. Our school has this big industrial vacuum, and I was trying to use it but found it frustrating. I came home and got this little vacuum. I offered it to others and soon everyone was using this little one. I noticed there is a new model but it doesn't have the crevice tool. I actually use the crevice tool a LOT. It's so easy to put on and take off, so you can get the spiders up in the corners of the room, get the cracks under the stove, etc. I LOVE this little vacuum. This is exactly what I thought it would be and works great for hardwood floors and tile. it is not for carpet, although I do use it to vacuum my throw rugs also. this is just a handheld vacuum with an extension handle and a little foot thing. No beater bar. For hard floors, we don't want beater bars as they send stuff flying. I have another dirt devil hand vacuum that has a cord and I really love it. I also found on that one that I always felt the cord was very long and although I originally had wanted a battery powered hand held unit that the corded unit had so much more power than any hand held I ever had and the cord just wasn't an issue. So, I expected that the talk about the cord not being long enough was all bunk. However, the truth is, that the cord really isn't long enough and ironically when I measured the length of the cords of both machines they were exactly the same. I guess the difference is that with the handheld you are just doing small areas, not trying to do the whole floor, while with this one you are trying to do the whole floor. It's also true that it would be nice if the top hook for holding the cord would flip down. However, the truth is that this was dirt cheap ( pun intended). So, I leave an extension cord attached, and I just loop up the cord and hang it on the top hook. I did look at a lot of other machines, but they were either totally out of this world expensive, ran for only 15 minutes on a battery charge, had beater bars, or were too heavy. My mom lives with us for many months out of the year and has advanced Alzheimer's. I really think she may be able to use this. It was important that it be very light, and it really does help that it will stand up on it's own. I will say there is a market for something like this that is a little more durable, has cord that retracts, a power button near the top and gives you a choice of using bags or not. People like me would be willing to spend a bit more for these features. I still give this 5 stars, it works great and is very light and very easy to get under the edges of most everything. Also my other dirt devil is still going strong, so I imagine that this will last many years despite it being made in China. If you are thinking of purchasing this just for the handheld unit, I must say that I like my other dirt devil better for that. The hole on this one if round ( to take the foot attachment) while the other is longer and flatter and also shorter in length. The other dirt devil also came with quite a few more attachments, the most useful being adapters to use the vacuum to blow up things, like exercise balls.

vacuum that does not vacuum?
Hello, I purchased this Dirt Devil after much consideration on my behalf. I have wooden floors, but one very large floor rug, in the style of oriental. Because my apartment is small and very old and located in the center of a metropolitan area, I was seeking a vacuum that fit tidily into my limited storage space, and adequately serviced my large parlor floor rug. (The floor rug gets very dirty, very quickly, as it it dark green! But overall, the vacuum I was seeking did not need to be exceedingly high in strength or quality to serve my needs. It simply needed to be light, small and portable, with the ability to clean one large surface area rug 1x per week.) Unfortunately, this "famous" product could deliver even that simple request. Upon receiving the item, which arrived late (if I recall, somewhere between 4 to 7 days), I was excited to finally turn it on and clean my rug. I read the entire manual--because I like to be thorough--and easily assembled the vacuum. I plugged it in and it turned on, and I began to vacuum. Unfortunately, while It turned on and "worked", it simply does not pick up debris or really function as a vacuum at all. I spent nearly 30 minutes going over and over the same spots, only to eventually "finish" vacuuming the rug. Upon "finishing", the rug was still partially covered in dust and still very definitively not clean. I thought maybe I was just doing something incorrectly, or was one of the few individuals in the world too dim to figure out how to use a dirt devil vacuum. However, my parents finally came over recently, and I asked them to try it, and afterward they asked me why I purchase a vacuum that doesn't work. So...after 2 months of sitting with a non-functioning vacuum, I was able to conclude that no, I was not indeed challenged in this very specific way---but that I had either received a lemon or dud vacuum, or the dirt devil is simply the worst vacuum in the entire world, and every positive review I read is a russian shill bot, or paid for play. (Just kidding...ha! But seriously, what?!) Anyway, by the time I confirmed it was not just me being technically and functionally challenged, it was past the Return Window for this product, according to Amazon. And even so, had it not been past the return window, the physical effort involvee to package and return an item of this size--not to mention, potential shipping cost-- would have outweighed the worth. Thusly, I am now about to create more waste (at the price of 29.99) to enter into our landfills with Monday's trash. What I would have preferred would to have quality control and to have received a proper functioning item to begin with. I would be happy to submit a video of the vacuum in action, if anyone would like. It's funny to watch, because it does not, in effect, "vacuum" anything at all. Oy

5 stars customer for no hassle sending replacement
I bought one for training mat & hardwood floors at martial arts, yoga studio & a second one for average to small rooms with carpet. Both vacuums work as needed. On the carpet which is slightly thick, vacuum slowly because width of area that picks up is small. But it picks up hair & small pieces on the surface just fine. Because vacuuming is done daily, items do not get buried, however for thicker carpets or deeper cleaning of not vacuuming daily, I suggest one with stronger suction or be patient staying a bit longer in those spots. Also the suction opening is in middle. Vacuuming edges along wall needs to be done straight at it not along side when on carpet. For hardwood floors or tile, the suction is enough to go parallel to wall edge for dust & hait, again go slowly. This vacuum is still working. The vacuum I purchased for training studio was perfect. The best part was its size for storage. We had one of those expensive lithium vacuums that needed to be hung on wall but now barely keeps a charge for 10 minutes. The Dirt Devil's cord is long enough we unplug only a few times up front & twice in back. The 3 in 1 feature of having option to use as hand vac with its attachment would make this vacuum a steal for the price. However, I can only give 3 star rating because of what I would consider a design flaw in the area where the filter section disconnects to the motor. The storage area where filter is small, which makes sense since vacuum has a sleek design. So that area needs to be removed often to clear its contents. That area is held connected by a small thin price of plastic which can & does break easily. Once that happens the whole vacuum becomes unusable. It can not even be used as a handheld because that tiny little piece is what holds the top motor weight to bottom lighter filter & catch bin. It's the same problem that other reviewers have also dinged product for in 1 & 2 star reviews. The vacuum was a gift for our training studio to replace the sputtering out lithium battery one. I like giving gifts that last. So that there knocks off 4 stars. But the one for single user, carpet rooms is still working as described. Add 5 stars. & 5 stars to customer service for their immediate reply & sending me return label to send damaged one back & then a working replacement. So averaging it out based on my experience with 2 vacuums purchased in March & one breaking at end of May with replacement sent in early June, is how I averaged my review. (I'm not a mathematician, lol, so please don't comment the numbers don't add up. Maybe they do?) Here are some suggestions if you are purchasing this inexpensive, effective vacuum. When cleaning out filter catch area, do it as if you were handling explosives, .... Calmly, unhurried & gently. That little plastic piece literally makes or breaks the product. If it wasn't for customer service my rating would be 1 star. For $20 bucks, it should at least last a year with average use. Overall, with these considerations & because of fast resolution from customer service I still recommend this product. This is a "convenience" type vacuum, not a heavy duty. But it's also a lot lighter than the bigger ones where lugging a heavier one for smaller jobs gets old real fast. With Gratitude

You can't go wrong with this vacuum!
PROS: Lightweight, great suction for an unbeatable deal Cons: Short electrical cord As a mother with a young toddler who can be a messy eater. I feel that this light-weight vacuum cleaner has saved my sanity. I keep this Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner in my dining room and kitchen area of our house. Like most mothers, you feel that your house can never stay clean no matter how often you pick up. Personally, I feel that sweeping takes too much time and I am always left with crumbs that were either missed or not able to be swept up by a simple dust pan. I believe that the Dirt Devil Vacuum Dirt Devil Vacuum Cleaner Simpli-Stik Lightweight Bagless Corded Stick and Handheld Vacuum has saved me plenty of time and energy to allow me to focus on other things! CONVIENCE: In today’s time, most people enjoy convinces of things in life. Personally, I think that this Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner is very convenient to the fact which all I need to do is plug this item in to an outlet and begin to vacuum up messes. My son drops a lot of food while eating so having this quick pick up really helps keep our day going. I know that some may say that the standard broom does the same job and I thought that too at first, but once I first used this vacuum it was less of a hassle to clean up the messes on the floor. This is not used for liquids, just crumbs. I was surprised to see that it would suction even larger items such as a normal vacuum cleaner would. I enjoy not having to try and wiggle out the crumbs that fall under the ledge of the cabinets on the floor. This vacuum quickly sucks it right up with no hassle. ATTACHMENTS: The one thing I knew with purchasing this vacuum cleaner was that I would not be using this to clean my carpets, but simply the small messes in the kitchen and dining room. If you are looking to have a vacuum for carpet, this is not the vacuum you would want. If you are looking for easy, quick pickups then this is a great product! This vacuum has a couple different features. It can be used as an upright vacuum, a handheld vacuum, and it also has a smaller attachment for tight to reach placed. This is a simple vacuum that gets the job done without the bells and whistles. I feel that having the upright position is great for vacuuming floors. But, if you want to vacuum out your car or even the couch the handheld option is perfect! The smaller attachment is great for getting in between the pockets of your couch. My one complaint with the features is that converting upright to handheld, you must take off the wheel portion of the vacuum. I find it can be difficult at times to remove that part. Other than that, I am very satisfied. CORD: Since I purchased to use this vacuum in my kitchen and dining room area, I am now realizing that the cord could be longer. The cord is 16ft, but even though my kitchen and dining room are in the same room, it still does not reach all sides. I would not say this is a deal breaker for me, but it can be a downfall I see with this vacuum. If you are within reach for the rooms you are looking to vacuum for, then it should not be an issue. FILTER: I LOVE that this vacuum is bag less! I have had the older, bulky vacuums that require bags and it is just costly to keep replacing them. I enjoy that the filter can be either cleaned or replaced. The replacements I have seen cost less than $8.00. I have had this vacuum for 11 months and have never had to replace the filter yet. The quick release of a push of a button and you can empty your filter. As this is a lightweight vacuum that can clean small rooms, if you are looking for a vacuum to clean your entire house, this is not for you. This Dirt Devil vacuum is great for needing to clean specific rooms or items. LIGHTWEIGHT: My experience with vacuums are that they can be bulky and heavy. This is not the case with the Dirt Devil vacuum. This vacuum is only 3.8lbs. Its small enough to just fit in the corner of the room with not taking any space. I love that I can easily take this vacuum without feeling hassled by the weight of this item. PRICE: I was blown away when I started using this vacuum because of how much I paid for it. For the great suction, being lightweight, having beneficial features I am simply blown away that it does not cost more! I have been using this vacuum daily, sometimes multiple times a day for just under a year and it still works just as good as the first day I purchased it. This is truly I feel the best vacuum you could get for such an amazing price!

Does a great job; has replaced my broom
This vacuum does all I intended it to. I'm VERY pleased with it. I purchased my first one a few weeks ago. It was for my daughter who was going off to college and would be sharing an apartment with 3 other girls. I did not want to purchase an expensive vacuum. I saw this Dirt Devil for under $20 and decided to give it a try. I tested the vacuum out at home and ended up loving it for little jobs around the house. So I bought myself one. First of all, this will NOT do the job of a full size and full powered vacuum but then again, I don't think that is it's purpose. I purchased this mainly to use in my laundry room and kitchen in place of a broom and dustpan. I keep my cat's litterbox in the laundry room and she manages to track litter from that room and in to the hallway. I would constantly sweep up but it seemed I never got ALL the litter up and was always stepping on some leftover piece. The kitchen was also a room with lots of "stuff" on it's floor. Leaves from outside, crumbs, etc. I also felt I missed things. Most likely, the broom just didn't catch everything and debris would be left on the floor. This vacuum works great for those areas. The vacuum is very lightweight (about 1-2 lbs.) and easy to carry around. It's a lot better than pulling out the Dyson vacuum which is big and heavy. I use the Dirt Devil every day in the laundry room and kitchen. One added bonus (for me anyhow) is that I can clean my floor mats and rugs with this thing too. The Dyson sucked those rugs right up and I'd end up unraveling rug strings from the beater bar! So to sum it up, this Dirt Devil vacuums my throw rugs, it cleans the tile floors great (it gets up all those annoying bits of litter) and it even works well on our carpet. Admittedly, the Dyson does a much better job on carpet and is a lot more powerful, but for little jobs when you don't want to lug out a heavy, bulky, full sized vacuum, this really does the job well. For costing less than $20 and for using it every day, I love this little vacuum. It is also very easy to clean. When I take out the filter cup I just wipe it with a used dryer sheet and it takes all the lint off. Bigger things that get picked up like the litter pieces just get dumped from the container. I have not tried it as a hand held dust buster type vacuum but I'm sure it would work just as well since it works great as an upright. And lastly, my daughter also loves the vacuum. Cleans up her bathroom floor and even picks up stuff from the shag carpet that is in her bedroom.

The little vacuum that could.
This is my go to vacuum and has been for many years. I got my first one about 20 years ago to clean up dry spills my kids made. The vacuum has been upgraded some over the years, better technology and all that, but is still in essence the same great product at the same great price. The suction has gotten much better over the years and the addition of the removable stick is a very welcome one! The edge tool provided is so helpful. This vacuum is light and easy to assemble. It works great on low and no pile flooring but not so great on high pile carpeting. You can use it to quickly get crumbs off your table or counter but moisture is its nemesis so be wary of that. The fully enclosed cannister is perfect for sucking up beads, sequens and glitter that you can then reuse if the canister and filter are kept clean. (For this price, I've always had one dedicated specifically to crafts for this exact reason.) Cobwebs are no match for this tiny beast and the stick makes it easy to reach those high corners. The lightweight body and long cord of this vacuum makes it the perfect tool for cleaning your stairs and baseboards. The filters are inexpensive and often come in multipacks. I can generally get 6 months of daily use out of a single filter. The filters *can* be rinsed in a pinch but must be air dried completely before using again. The cannister and edge tool can absolutely go through the dishwasher, the wide head and motor cannot (obviously.) I wouldn't recommend this as a primary pet hair control tool, the suction is not strong enough to remove the hair thats embedded deeply into fabric and the plastic used to make it attracts the pet hair to the wrong area of the vacuum. (You end up with more pet hair on the outside of the vacuum than in the cannister in my experience.) I would suggest making sure you empty the cannister and brush off the filter every time you use it for optimal longevity and operation. This vacuum stands on its own using the wide head, is light enough to be hung on a command hook and the stick is just the right size to fit into a pressure clamp broom holder, making it easy to store even in a small dorm. This is all around a great vacuum and I recommend it to everyone.

Best light weight vaccum, and has great power
I wanted a light vacuums just for kitchen spills and light pick up. It was so easy to assemble, and so light to carry. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a light pick up. The filter cup holds enough for the areas I do. The only thing I wish was bigger and easier to use is the on/off switch, it's small and a little tricky to start, more stiff than anything. Also wish the cord was a little longer for my kitchen and sunroof, but overall would give this a 9 out of 10, and would definitely purchase again!
