CURT Manufacturing 114683 Class 1 Trailer Hitch with Old-Style Ball Mount, Pin and Clip

Solid hitch. Good, consistent finish. Seems well made. I bought it to handle a cargo carrier and a bike carrier. I don't really plan to tow anything. I like the fact that the CURT hitch uses a rectangular cross bar. I believe this provides a bit more resistance to twist/torque created by the type of duty I expect from this hitch. I want to address some of the recurring complaints. FIT: My hitch fit fine and installed relatively easily (with 1 exception - I will explain later). That is not to say it was a "perfect" fit. I measured the hole pattern on the hitch --and, importantly, I measured the diagonal distances between holes (as if each hole is the corner of a rectangle). The dimensions were RIGHT ON THE MONEY (including equal diagonal measurements). The holes were positioned "correctly." Keep in mind that Toyota uses their holes for mounting of independent tie-down hooks. It is absolutely NOT critical for Toyota or the shipping companies that the tie downs be located precisely (relative to the tie-down on the other side). Thus, it is MOST likely that the locations of the Toyota mounting holes and threaded nuts (mounted to the top side of the left and right frame members) are the source of the variation that occasionally causes a poor fit. My hole alignment was off by roughly 1/8inch on 1 corner. I used a short piece of 2x4 to pry the hitch and frame to get the last bolt to align. (This is NOT a CURT issue). WEIGHT: Somewhere in the ball park of 30lbs. I think this is reasonable and to be expected. I wouldn't want the hitch to be wimpy. And I wouldn't elect to pay the substantial premium that would be required for a lighter & stronger material (if such a thing was available). SHIPPING: My hitch arrived in a single walled box (damaged by UPS - as usual), The hitch was partially wrapped with heavy protective adhesive paper and was padded on 1 end by a blob of expansion foam, in a plastic sheath to keep the foam from adhereing to the hitch. The hitch, itself, was undamaged. TWO additional comments: I chose to reinstall the piece of plastic flashing with an enlarged SLOT rather than cut the flashing all the way to the rear edge. This was easily done, but slightly complicated the installation process because you need to slip the hitch through the slot prior to (and during) installation. If you decide to do this (which I think is a good idea) you need to expect to manage the flashing while you struggle to align the bolts and start the threading. You are likely to need to perform 1 or 2 trial fits to get the slot sized correctly (wihtout overdoing it). The one and only thing that caused me grief during installation was the fact that I was expecting the flashing to be held by 4 screws (as was indicated in the installation video/instructions). In fact, 1 screw was a hex-head bolt without Phillips head option (no issue). 1 was a hex head screw with Phillips head option (no issue) and 2 were plastic retainer clips (not screws). 1 of the 2 retainer clips was a complete PITA. It was a challenge to remove and it was an even bigger challenge to reinstall. Yes -- it broke (not to the extent of being non-functional). But for reasons I can't quite explain, it did NOT want to go back into its hole. I very nearly replaced it with a nut/bolt combo (probably should have -- because it would have been immensely satisfying to mash the snot out of it with a sledge). ... I know... not mature, but that was not at the top of my priority list at the time the little piece of CR@P was being so stubborn. Ultimately, it was my wife who came to the rescue with an extra set of hands (to hold a flashlight) and encouragement to muster a touch more patience. BOTTOM LINE: Nice hitch. Decent fit. Good deal on Amazon. Install time for the hitch: Approx 40minutes. Install time for the stubborn POS retainer clip: Approx 40 minutes. (and, man, was I steamed)

Great hitch. I was able to install it pretty easily on a 2006 Prius, but I was never able to get the under body fascia back onto the Prius. They say you can trim it to get it back on, but I haven't had the time and the car seems to be fine without it. It I lived in an area with snow, it might be a problem. But a hacksaw and 30 minutes might solve this problem.

This is a well-made, heavy duty tow hitch receiver that I was able to install easily on our 2006 Toyota Prius. We got it for use with our Yakima DoubleDown 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack . Amazon had an excellent price on it, and, although it arrived via FedEx with a partially torn-up & re-taped box, the hitch receiver itself was undamaged. And, the hitch receiver I received was the revised, newer model w/ the cut-out for the exhaust. I installed it easily enough in about 30 minutes. To make the job as easy as possible, I had a floor jack, wheel chocks & two small jack stands so that I could safely elevate the rear-end of the Prius in my garage. This is necessary as there is very little clearance underneath the rear end of the car. Once elevated, I removed the two factory tow hooks using a socket wrench (the factory bolts are metric, although I do not recall the exact size - just that they were smaller than the 17 mm bolts supplied with the hitch receiver). On the driver's side, the tow hook is covered up by a large, thin plastic guard. The installation instructions tell you to remove the guard entirely. However, I simply cut out an approximate 8" x 4" piece of the guard around the tow hook using a carpet cutter which allowed me to easily access & remove the tow hook & left enough room for the hitch receiver to mount. Then, using the floor jack, I hoisted up the hitch receiver in place and screwed in the 4 bolts to secure it to the car's frame rails (the holes matched up perfectly). Finally, using a torque wrench, I torqued down the bolts to the 35 ft/lbs specified in the installation instructions. Once I installed the Yakima DoubleDown Bike Rack, I was pleased to discover that I was able to open the Prius's rear hatch door all the way, clearing the bike rack without having to swing the bike rack down. It cleared by about 1" - perfect! I highly recommend this hitch receiver & bike rack combination if you have a 2006 Prius (it fits other model years as well - 2004-9 I believe, but verify that using the "Make Sure It Fits" drop-down on Amazon's main page for the hitch receiver before you order). To recap, the tools I used to install it were: Socket Wrench (w/ 4" Extender) Metric Sockets Torque Wrench Carpet Cutter (to trim plastic underbody panel on driver's side) Wheel Chocks (to secure front wheels while rear of car is elevated) Floor Jack 2 Jack Stands If you do not have these tools at your disposal, another reviewer here had it installed for $35...

Delivered in an unbelievable one day! Even though the box was damaged considerably ( although the carrier broke the box, Curt could have certainly done a little better job packaging it) the hitch lined up properly without needing straightening. Welds look very good, and hitch fits unobtrusively under the car. The hitch pin and clip need to be inserted awkwardly through the safety hook retainers. The instructions won't tell you this, but will need a 10mm, 14mm and 17mm socket and a strong scissors or knife to cut the fascia plate. and a flat blade screwdriver or something similar to pop the reusable plastic rivets off with. The slot in the fascia gets extended all the way to the edge, it will no longer be just a hole. Oh, I would suggest getting the kit without the ball adapter unless you have a very low trailer! Maybe the Euro style is taller, but the 2" lift adapter is nowhere near tall enough for my little Harbor Freight trailer with 12" tires. I will need to buy an adapter with closer to a 6" rise to get my trailer near level. Note; if your trailer tilts down towards the car you can easily exceed the weight rating of the hitch (350#). This was mounted on a 2004 Prius with stock suspension and wheels. Toyota says that this car has no towing capacity. 4NOV2013- I've hauled a whole lot more than I intended to at first, several times taking 10 bales of hay (probably about 1500 pounds) more than 10 miles, and hauling loads of between 500 and 1200# many times. The welds on the hitch are fine and there are no cracks yet. The paint hasn't flaked or chipped, but this is california, so I don't expect it to anyway. I haven't purchased the 6" riser adapter yet because I find the slight tilt to be useful in keeping things in the trailer when I don't have the tailgate in.

How about measuring before they ship it out? Wasted 3 hours trying mounting it as is because SORRY I was expecting a product that fits. In 52 years, never had to deal with such BS. Are we in Africa? Is this an African company? With all the respect for Africa... Finally I realized the holes are too narrow. Called Curt and LIE to your face saying this has never been a REPORTED PROBLEM. LIERS. Then I come to Amazon and see tons of people with the same issues. Plus the only installation video I see where the guy finds the same problem. RIDICULOUS. I undestand if this was $50, not it's over $200 for this junk. At least warn people before trying the installation. No it's all good. For sure will never buy a CURT product in my life. Or actually will buy, will measure before starting installation and will RETURN if not in specs. Then after several returns they will learn a lesson, hopefully.

After U-haul made an appointment and then didn't have the hitch in stock when I showed up, I ordered the 11468 Curt hitch from Amazon thinking I would either install it myself or get U-haul to do it as some reviewers suggested. First of all, a warning for potential buyers: My local U-haul dealers (Essex, Passaic, Wayne and Bergen counties NJ) refused to install any hitch other than their own. I discovered this only after I had problems installing this one so please check with your local dealer if after reading my instructions below you want to have someone else install this hitch.. Secondly, I was confused by the reviews here and elsewhere on the web that stated that this hitch either installed with no problems and was a great buy or basically cursed the company that made it while listing problems such as the holes being off by as much as an inch when they tried to install it. Feeling lucky, I went ahead and ordered it thinking that the problem some people had, "Must be fixed by now." Attention all buyers! Here is the bottom line on this hitch: There is no problem with the hitch. The problem is with the SHIPPING! My hitch arrived with the holes much narrower than the 38.06 inch center to center measurement that Curt Hitch specifies. When I called Curt Hitch customer service, they said this often happens when your friendly UPS or Fed Ex delivery person dumps the 36 lb package off the back of the truck, bending one end of the hitch. So here are the steps to see if your hitch is affected: Measure center to center the holes on either side of the hitch to see if yours is 38.06 inches. If not, either call Amazon for a return or use (one or all of) the following methods to correct it:. 1.Take a square and put it on the ground next to each of the "wings" containing the holes which will bolt to the frame. They should form a perfect 90 degree angle with the ground. If not, the one that is the most off from 90 degrees is the one the box was dropped on and needs to be straightened. Otherwise, if they are both square and the center-to-center measurement is not correct, you have the wrong hitch for a Prius in the years specified for the 11468. 2. Curt Hitch recommended repair method: Find an open stairwell (one that does not have vertical pieces in the steps) and from the backside of the stairs hang the hitch by the side that needs to be corrected and step on the other end to bend it back to 90 degrees OR get a jack and a 2x4 and place the good side of the hitch on a concrete floor, put the jack and the 2x4 on it extending up to the "bad" side and pump the jack up until it bends back to 90 degrees and the correct measurement center to center. 3. What I did when I didn't have either of these: Put the "bad" end in a vise and used the leverage of the length of the hitch to move it until it was close. Put the hitch on a towel on a concrete floor, put a rag on the "bad" side of the hitch, take a sledge hammer and hit this side 5 or 6 times with one foot on the long piece between the wings and one foot bracing the "bad" side so it wouldn't move. When center to center was a hair over 38 inches, installed the hitch on the Prius frame in about 30 minutes. Since it took me nearly two hours of "discovery" to get to this point, I am including these directions here in the hope of saving someone else considerable time and effort. Yes, it probably would be a good idea for Curt Hitch to spend another 29 cents and wrap both ends in bubble wrap or foam before shipping to prevent all this nonsense but they are probably not thinking that their end customer is a consumer without all the tools on hand to straighten it back to spec and so, "Why bother?"

Ok so it wasn’t an “easy” plug and play install on my Prius 2008 touring; not sure if my frame had been banged up over the years enough to warp the trailer hitch mounting hole alignment, but if it hadn’t been for having a lift and a crowbar it wouldn’t have been a fit. We had to get one in, push the crow bar against the hitch so that we could get the bolt holes lined up with the cars oem mount holes. At the end of the day, doable, but definitely needed a lift and a torque wrench. Also- my car is going on 20 years so I can’t confirm that it’s not my car, will give the mount the benefit of the doubt. Also, class 2 hitch, it’s tiny lol

This perfectly fit my 2007 Prius. The holes lined up great, the install process was simple, and I'm now towing things with my hybrid! YEAHHH TIM ALLEN EAT YOUR HEART OUT OOOGH OOOGH OOOGH! The only thing I really had to play with was cutting out a slot in the under-car plastic shield that covered the area previously unexposed behind the removed tow-hooks. A picture as an aid would have been beneficial, as I had to make a few cuts in order to get it just right. But if you own a utility knife and can cut things with it, odds are that you'll end up with something that works just fine after a few tries. The install job took me just over 18 minutes with all the appropriate tools nearby. I did the install on a dirt driveway, outside, not in a garage, with the prius backed up onto ramps on the rear wheels, and a headlamp in order to see more clearly. So if your "shop conditions" are better, this might only take you 15 minutes.

Fit our 2008 Prius perfectly. No cutting or alterations. Took off the shipping hooks and bolted this on. 10 minute install.
