Hi i have the cameras installed already, but my dvr (ds-7204hqhi-f1) is this ok to use instead? ie same connections etc

This is an NVR so the camera connections need to be ethernet RJ45. The DVR you already have, 7204HQHI uses cameras with a BNC connector. So no it isn't suitable for your existing cameras.

Why is it so noisy? Any way to reduce this?

I'd the noise is a whirring noise either the fan or the hard drive- unless excessive noise it cannot be quietened. Usually sounds like a computer, as that is what it basically is similar to. They are not recommended to be put near tv or I a bedroom due to the noise. However if it is louder than a computer, get it checked.

Can you add a wifi camera to these NVRs?

Yes you can. WiFi network adapter required.

What’s the difference between an nvr and a dvr? for poe does a standard cat5 work okay or does it have to be a different cable?

Have used Cat5e and power over ethernet (poe) works fine.
