Works great for archival backup and great speed.
I have bought several of these as archival storage using windows and adding files as they need to be backed up just like I would be moving to another folder. Speed of transfer is far better than most other bluray disk burners. I rarely have any coasters being made using this device which is an improvement over other options. I have bought several others to keep on hand just in case or if I upgrade other computers. I do not use these to rip blurays.

A must have for ripping!
Works excellent with MakeMKV. I have been using it to rip my Blu-Rays to my Plex library. This thing tears through Blu-Rays, around 8x speed at most. A movie can be finished in under 20 minutes. The drive I got came with the HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH16NS58. I was able to flash the firmware easily using SDFtool -- WH16NS60_1.02_MK.bin was what I flashed on it, if you're curious -- so I've gained ability to rip my UHD discs as well to the library. Massive upgrade from the generic BD-RE drive I got with mystery parts inside. Only downside is that I'll probably need to upgrade my storage soon!

Beware!!! It's not a Buffalo but a Pioneer wrapped in a Buffalo skin.
Beware, I bought one of these two years ago and loved it. But sadly after extended use it no longer burns but still plays and rips. I bought a replacement and was sent a Pioneer bdr-209m dressed in Buffalo's clothing. Buffalo tech support told me it was a driver problem with my computer. My computer seems to have to problem correctly identifying my other Buffalo, or my LG, or my Mitsubishi or even my Memorex. Still I did as they suggested and it made no difference. I tried it on my father's PC and it shows it as a Pioneer, took it to a friends and it still shows as a Pioneer on his PC. Three strikes and you're out Buffalo, returning it for an Amazon credit and will buy a different drive. This would have been my third Buffalo drive, have always liked their quality. Maybe someday they'll again sell their own drives and I'll try them out again. In the photo posted, the top one is the older one and you can see they're a little different. The bottom one is the new one and if you compare it with one of the Pioneer bdr-209m drives they sell here on Amazon you'll see they are identical except for the Pioneer logo. Update 2/7/17 I bought another Buffalo drive (40099860201915) from a different vendor. Same damn thing, a Pioneer BDR-209M on two different updated systems. It rips disc at at a third of the speed and is a much noisier unit, it just looks cheaper and is. You can buy the pioneer for just over $70 and a nice optical drive external enclosure for around $50 here at Amazon and have the same thing for less. Apparently Buffalo has found a way to save money and increase profits at the expense of their customers. I'll be contacting Amazon's purchasing dept. as they are also being ripper off and maybe even the BBB. Update 4/6/17 Filed complaint with BBB. In Buffalo's reply they did admit to using a Pioneer drive now so it was never a driver problem like their tech "support" claim three different times. They also claim it has the same specs as the older unit. Not true, I still have a working older unit and it's not a noisy and it reads and rips disc much faster, They also claimed this was some other problem related to software or computer. Couldn't believe them the first time and this claim also just doesn't hold water. The truth is this drive is just a cheep knock-off of the original, it even looks cheep, nothing like on the box. Do yourself a favor and go with the LG 14X BE14NU40 or the ASUS 12X (BW-12D1S-U Lite), I have both of those models as well and they're better blu ray drives. Not to mention you're getting what you pay for, not a cheep knock-off.

Great for Bluray but has trouble with DVDs
I bought this drive to use with my laptop since disc drives aren't standard on laptops anymore. It's easy to install and plays Bluray excellently. The write function is great too. The only issues I have with this drive is: 1, Playing and writing DVDs is a 50/50 gamble. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. All the DVDs I've tried are the correct region with no scratches or defects. Many of them are brand new and still won't play. It occasionally happens with Bluray as well. 2, Sometimes the drive won't spin up and I have to disconnect the drive from my laptop and the power source, then restart my laptop and re-set up the drive to get it working again. This happens roughly every other day. There's no power issues since the drive is plugged directly into the wall and the USB ports on my laptop are in great shape since the laptop is new, so power and connection aren't the problem. All I can think of is there may be an issue with the DVD drive sensor. Still, I don't regret the purchase even if its sometimes troublesome to use. Luckily, I'm a very patient person and use it primarily for media. If I had to use it for work, it'd be a different story.

The complete package.
I started digitizing my library the day I got it (note: it comes with playback and burning software, but ripping is separate). These days, a reliable BD drive that can rip and burn discs is hard to come by, and most PCs don’t even have a slot for an optical drive anymore, so having it in its own case is perfect. An added bonus is being able to move it around and use it as a portable media player. Highly recommend.

HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH16NS58
HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH16NS58 Firmware: 1.02 Tested and reads OK. According to Buffalo Americas manual, likely either a LG or Sony Blu-ray drive, mine happened to be an LG. No updated firmware via manufacturer website(s), but firmware maybe compatible with other later updated LG products, such as the WH16NS60 Blu-ray internal drive. Updated my WH16NS60 from 1.02 to 1.03, and I have not tried updating this Buffalo portable this Buffalo LG BH16NS58 drive yet. Firmware may require updating for playing Blu-ray Movies and other protected media. Updating firmware is risky; rule of thumb for firmware updates, do not upgrade if not needed. 2026.01.08 Update after purchasing through Amazon.com owned Woot store front, I subsequently registered the device for obtaining software, for which said software is already included with the vaguely marked CD/DVD within the box; and obtained the following odd response through Email a few days later: --- Snip --- Our sincere apologies, but due to Woot's violation of reseller policy, this unit is not eligible for registration and carries no warranty coverage. This mailbox is not monitored. Any replies to this message will not be answered. (MASKED NAME) Warranty Claims Coordinator Buffalo Americas --- Snip --- So heads-up, if you're purchasing this or other items through Woot, warranty may not be applicable, for which is very odd in my opinion. However, due to the shortage of Blu-ray drives, think most of us will be thankful having for their photography or document long term storage solution. Shrugs....

WOW -- If you have a need for speed look no futher!
I was a little skeptical about seeing much improvement, I have a brand new HP PC that is fast as greased lightening and so I pretty much expected everything in it to be fast but that was clearly not the case for the Blu-Ray R/W unit that is internal SATA bus attached and should be far faster than anything USB 3 attached but not so. Pro's: - Very Fast, hitting reads at 12x on DVD and 6.7x on BR, and everything else is even faster - True plug n' Play for Win7 (I have not tried Win10 or Mac) - Lay-Flat form factor - Motorized Tray, no fumbling with a pressure hub on a flimsy tray - Heavy with good rubber pads, does not slide around even on a slick surface - For Win7 all needed drivers are already part of the OS, no need to load their bloatware Con's: - Crippled software that is 6 major revisions behind and lots of nag screens to upgrade (Cyberlink's fault) - Count on buying the upgrade if you do not already own a BR authoring package (Cyberlink is a very good package, Roxio also if you prefer) The con's were not an issue for me, I already have the latest CyberLink PowerDirector & PowerDVD, Roxio Creator and other packages to deal with the discs. Here is a BR and DVD comparison to the build in BR unit in my PC (All tests were done on USB 3, USB 2 will be a lot slower) - Rip a 30GB HD home movie from Blu-Ray -- 16 Minutes on Buffalo / 34 Minutes on HP Player -- (30.2 M/s @6.7x Read) - Rip a 4GB HD home movie from DVD -- 4.5 Minutes on Buffalo / 22 Minutes on HP Player -- (16.1 M/s @ 12.2x) I have not found any tools this drive does not work well with including, MakeMKV, CyberLink PowerDirector, Replay Convert, VideoReDo+, VLC and of course WMC and WMP. It would be hard to be happier with the performance, the looks, size, and weight, for a desktop situation, this would not make a good portable drive it is took big and heavy compared to ones designed for portable use. Also keep in mind that for normal playback speed is not a consideration since everything plays at 1x.

Excellent product that worked right out of the box
I had recently tried a different external DVD/CD drive (purchased from another company) with my Mac Mini and was disappointed that the unit did not work at all. After troubleshooting with their tech team and arranging for an RMA on it, I went with the Buffalo Blu-ray model from Amazon and have been very happy with it. It works on both my Mac Mini and Windows machine through a KVM switch with a USB 3 hub so I can access the device on either machine without having to disconnect and reconnect the drive between computers. It reads every kind of media I've thrown at it and I've been able to burn gigabytes of old photos to DVD archives without a problem in both computing environments. I love the fact that the drive has its own power supply so using it with the powered USB hub and KVM switch combo is a breeze without creating a power load problem for either computer. Would definitely recommend this for anyone needing to add an optical drive to their computer set up.
