Ordered 'new copy' but dust jacket has been through the war
The contents of the book are great! A quick preview shows real-world applications that act as a reminder or a new 'trick' when using mathematics at work, in conversation, stores, etc..The physical book seems to be in okay condition, can definitely see where the 'selector' dragged along book cover that ultimately ripped the dust jacket, cover is just marred. The dust jacket, however, will never be able to repel dust without a Scotch tape repair. It doesn't seem worthwhile to return just for the dust jacket nor is it environmentally responsible, but wanted to let Amazon and others know that this occurred and that the 'selector' (most likely a piece of equipment) needs to be refined.

A Mixture of Various Enjoyable Morsels
This book is about the application of mathematics to various things/phenomena that one sees/experiences in everyday life. The topics discussed are amazingly wide-ranging. A small sample includes: mental calculations, interest rates, paper sizes, some gambling, some sports, art, map coloring, encryption, mathematics in nature, optics, etc., etc. In each case the discussion is not exhaustive but in just enough to allow the reader to appreciate the use of a bit of mathematics in such a wide range of circumstances. Each chapter can be read independently of the others and, thus, in any order.I found this book to be quite enjoyable – some sections much more so than some of the others, which is normal, I believe, since people generally have different interests. The prose in clear, lively and very friendly. Regarding accessibility, readers should be familiar with high school mathematics, particularly geometry, trigonometry and algebra. No calculus is used at all. I did find a few errors, mainly editorial ones. For example, Table 5.1 (p. 210) is just a black rectangle without the information alluded to in the text just above it.Overall, I found the book to be a lot of fun. It could be enjoyed by just about anyone, particularly lovers of mathematics.
