My front door which I want to guard is made of steel/aluminum. Would it work sensing anyone that approaches my door from the outside?

Mine does not work through my metal door, but it also has to go through the storm door also. It does work through walls and ceilings.

Is there a way to remotely "disarm" it (e.g. cell phone app)?

Devices like Wemo are now widely available, fairly cheap, connect to the internet through one's home router & can so be controlled by Amazon Electra or a cell phone app. It should now be quite easy to interface one with a device like Rex Plus Barking Dog Alarm, to turn the speaker of f& on remotely.
