good price / performance ratio for system builders

Solid choice with very good single-core performance. It's a minimalist product aimed at system builders-- there's literally nothing in the box other than the chip. What you should know, what's to like:* No onboard graphics. That means no display whatsoever without a discrete GPU. But this is good if you were doing a separate GPU anyway (and keeps the chip cheap).* No fan/heatsink included. If you're building an enthusiast system, that encourages you to pick something other than the so-so, noisy devices that were shipped with older Intel processors.* 6-core is substantial enough, since most desktop use isn't highly threaded (other than on the GPU).* 4.6 GHZ turboboost can't apply to all cores, but when just one core is pegged, it can go notably faster than the 3.7 GHZ base clock.* K series chips can be overclocked ("unlocked") with the appropriate moboWhat's to not like:* Not much architectural change from 8th gen products (or 7th gen). It's the same 14nm process as 6th gen.* Intel keeps changing the processor sockets, so we have to keep buying new motherboards.* Runs fairly hot / high TDP by modern standards.Although this 9th-gen Intel CPU is not remarkably different from the 3 generations preceding it, and most of the buzz today is over the top-end processors and the competition with AMD and ARM... there's still many times you just want a basic, well-priced x86-64 processor, not the expensive headline grabbers. This one hits the price-performance point for your typical hobbyist or gamer. Recommended.

Excellent processor, even if its and old generation!

Even though socket 1151 has been dead for a few years, its still a solid platform with nice cpus that you can still find at retail stores and websites. This 9600KF is a nice upgrade from someone that is currently using a I3 9100 or even an I5 9400. I just upgraded to this cpu from a 9400 and although is not noticeable in Windows, you can definitely notice a difference while gaming if your graphics card was bottlenecked by the processor. As of July of 2022 you can buy this Cpu $15 cheaper if you make the order thru the amazon Mobile app and is your first order using that app.

Work's great.

Great chip for price.

Great chip. Running at 4.88ghz OC. Didn't win the silicon lottery but still pretty optimal speed for a 9th gen.

Better than the i7 for gaming

I bought this for my son's computer. He likes shooting games and I wanted him to experience building his own system. My Ph.D. is in AI and I used to teach college. The i5 is simply more stable and less likely to glitch than the faster i7. In many ways, the i5 is faster because the operating system does not have to manage so many cores for what little they contribute while gaming. In gaming, it's the video card that is of primary importance. Having a stable CPU to manage the card makes more sense than having twice as many cores to impress your friends.

Solid Performance, Underwhelming OC

Base performance is exactly what I was expecting, and this is an excellent processor line for gaming as very few games use more than six cores. However, I was not impressed with the overclocking stability. I was able to get the processor to 4.6 MHz before I started seeing stability issues in benchmark tests. Reports of 5 GHz and higher I was seeing are either for people willing to sacrifice stability or they had a chip with fewer flaws. For the vast majority of people who just want a good gaming experience this is an excellent processor when paired with a Z390 or Z370 motherboard. If you want to being doing overclocking, however, I recommend spending the extra money and getting an i7 9th generation chip at the least.

It worked right out of the box

bought it for gaming an for my 9600kf i5 an it worked right out of the box when you receive it don't be alarmed when the board actually says 8th gen processor it works for both an the box actually reaffirms that saying 9th gen ready , literally had no trouble once I got everything booted it started it like a charm, this is a great deal don't spend more if you don't have to or want to its all here especially for us mid range gamers, id say its pretty future proof unless you like to go above an beyond

Great power for the price

A previous reviewer lamented the price of this CPU when it was higher than the standard i5-9600K, since that one includes the GPU.When I bought this CPU, it was a good $20 lower than its counterpart, and that made it a good bargain. Unless you need i7-level performance (and I didn't), then this processor has plenty of power for gaming (as my daughter's Overwatch play can attest). If you are gaming, then you're probably installing a dedicated graphics card anyway, and as long as the price of this CPU stays lower than the GPU-enabled counterpart, then I wholeheartedly recommend it.
