My Dog's a Scaredy-Cat #10: A Halloween Tail (Hank Zipzer)

A Review of Hank Zipzer, My Dog's a Scaredy Cat by Mr. Cole's third graders at West Friendship Elementary, Howard County Maryland My Dog's a Scaredy Cat is a great book for third graders to read. It is also a good read aloud book for teachers. First, it is an interesting book for both girls and boys. The main characters include both boys and a girl. They are Hank, Ashley, and Frankie. Those three kids are best friends who live in New York City. They are in fourth grade. Secondly, it is extremely funny. For example, Hank dressed up as an Italian Restaurant table for Halloween. And this idea did NOT work out too well. What happened during the parade was hilarious. Also, there is a kid in Hank's school who is a real bully, and he has a funny nickname. Once again, you will need to read the book to find out what that funny nickname is. Thirdly, there are people in this book that most kids can really relate to. For example, there is this girl named Heather Payne who is so good at math that she doesn't know how to relax and have fun. She is always work, work, work. Most kids know someone like this, and I could really relate to that part of the story. Finally, this book is realistic in a serious way. It deals with how kids solve the bully problem at their school. It also talks about how a kid with a learning disability copes with everyday life. This is a great book to read, especially if you like haunted houses and dogs who run in circles. Both are important elements in this story. Try to get your teacher to read it to her class or better yet, read it yourself! Wa, ha, ha, ha!

Revenge is best served on a cold dish! Sometimes a bully gets his just deserts. When they do is it ever so sweet. But Hank has learned a lesson about revenge too. He also learns how to accept himself as well. Along with learning his response ability first gos to his dog Cheerios. But all in all Hank his family and best friends get to watch and enjoy Mcnalty fear and watch him running away. Yes this was a great Halloween after all. Even though they didn’t get to Trick or Treat. After all it’s not every day you get to teach a bully a awesome lesson, one he won’t forget for a long time. A great and funny read. Debra H.

Absolutely the best series for this age group. My 4th grader loved them and was sad when he made it to the end of them. He was racing through them, we had to make rules about when he could have free reading time. He laughed a lot and loved the way Hank was presented.

my 11 yr old 5th gr daughter is a devoted Hank Zipzer fan; she had read thru #7 & wanted the next few in the series for her Dec bday/Christmas; these are quick easy reads for her, but very enjoyable; I even like when she reads out loud to me; they help her better understand her Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & learning disabilities (LD) in a fun way; Henry Winkler turned his negative childhood experiences into a positive thing for his children & ours

I adored Henry Winkler when I was a kid and he played 'The Fonz' on Happy Days. Who knew that he was not only a great actor but an awesome and incredibly funny author as well?! These books are absolutely the best for boys who face challenges at school, home, or with friends. Mr. Winkler deals with some difficult kid issues with grace and humor...

Read this with my dyslexic group of students. They love the humor in these books and more importantly reading about another student who struggles like they do. On to the next one. All the Hank books are great!

My son is a 3rd grader. He has read 6 of the Hank Zipzer books and loves them all. Great series and really has him laughing out loud.
