Review: Great pair of boots. - UPDATE: Everything below still goes, but I ended up sending back the 9 and getting an 8.5. They're perfect now. The 9s were just too big. I'm looking to find the best conditioner/waterproof because the color on these is fantastic. Wearing them today to break them in and they're comfortable out of the box. Beautiful shoes and absolutely no faults I can find. I'm wearing two pairs of socks as well just in case, but so far, so good. High quality and looking forward to years of wearing these. There is some wear already and creasing in the leather after a little bit or wearing. My guess is that the leather is a little dried out, but I plan on conditioning them anyway, some stuff on the way. The other reviews I've seen show that these shoes (and any leather shoes) MUST BE CONDITIONED and WATERPROOFED. That's how the boots really last. The stitching and construction is great, but any leather no matter how expensive, will weather. My sizing advice: If you normally have some room in your shoes at the end (about a pinky length if the shoes are too skinny) then go down a whole size from your most common shoe size. As stated below, my shoe size is all over the place, but 9.5 fits the best in most and the 8.5 here is perfect. As everyone has said, these run large. Almost too large. I wear a 10.5 in Adidas, 10 in Nike, 9.5 in Puma, 9 in boots and dress shoes so I went with a 9. I maybe could even get away with an 8.5, but it would be a problem in width wise I think. The boots look huge compared to my foot, but an extra pair of socks and they fit nicely. The leather and cordovan/burgundy color is gorgeous. The finish is nice and as some others have pointed out, there are some concerns with the stitching, although it doesn't appear that anything is actually "wrong." Boots feel sturdy and are heavy. I have not worn them yet as it's supposed to be 90 degrees this week, but looking forward to fall. I have 4 other pairs of boots, and none of them were this expensive. Comparing them, these seems to be much more substantial and have a cleaner finish and look. (I have Timberlands, Aldo, Clarks, and Bullboxer). They look great with jeans and cords and the burgundy color is the new neutral so I'll get lots of good wear out of these. I'll need to add protectant as I bought these in hopes of not having to replace them for a few years like I did with my Docs - those lasted 6 years! Review: High quality and style at a great price point - Pros: - rich leather construction, on par with boots that cost much more - 360 degree Goodyear welt construction - full vibram outsole with non-aggressive v-bar tread - waxed flat laces look great - made in USA Cons: - fits about 1/2 size large. - no additional insole; makes the boot feel even larger - no speed hooks When I opened the box, the quality of these boots was immediatey evident. The rich leather is smooth, and the color deep and uniform. People make a big deal about Horween leather, and while this is not (as far as I'm aware) I think you'll still be impressed nonetheless. When I first tried them on, I felt like my feet were swimming in them. I would agree that these fit about 1/2 size large, however... I wear a size 13, but there is no 12.5 option. I also ordered a 12, but I couldn't even get my foot in them without completely unlacing each boot. So as a solution, I looked into insoles. I found Chippewa insoles at my local work gear store, and trimmed them to fit (there is no removable insole from the factory). However they were entirely too thick and the boots were painfully tight. I then went back on desertcart and ordered a bunch of different insoles, eventually settling on a pair of ecco's. Now I have a snug, much more comfortable fit that should conform to my foot nicely. While I wish for speed hooks up top, I'm willing to overlook the omission as the waxed flat laces look great and stay tied. The tongue is stitched to the quarters @ the 4th eyelet, so there is ample room to slip on and off while still keeping wind and water out. The big plus for me is the full vibram rubber sole, which allows you to go almost anywhere, even in wet conditions, making these boots very practical. Overall, very happy with this purchase. Even at full MSRP these boots are a great value, but if you manage to find a better price you have to pull the trigger. This is a wardrobe staple. The compliments are free.

High quality and style at a great price point

Great looking boot, feels great as well!
I wear a 9.5 in dress shoes, sebagos and other shoes. Took advice from other reviewers and ordered a 9 M. Perfect fit. Beautiful leather, feels great and looks great. Visually inspected and no problems with quality. I wore them around the house and office for a few days this week to start breaking in. No problems. Walked about a mile today on pavement. Felt great. No heel slip, no blisters, not even hot spots. I am wearing some heavier hiking socks, but don't plan on always doing this. Not sure about other reviews, the insole feels fine, comfortable and not too hard. It's a boot. Also, if your heel is really rising a lot, the boot size may be too big for you. Boots do take time to break in and crease on the top of the boot near the toes. Until they bend here, your heel can lift up instead. I have not noticed this in this boot. These are not quick boots to put on. There are no speed eyelets near the top like hiking boots, which would be nice. Those could be fitted later by a cobbler. The laces are long enough to leave them all laced up, but loosened entirely so the foot can be slipped out and in. To tighten, reverse process. These boots are too nice to really work outside in and get muddy. They are not sturdy enough and do not fit tight enough to hike in. Great for kicking around town, working in the garage, or wearing to work. UPDATE: 2/7/2015 Break in period is officially over, it really was just a couple hours. They are also easier to get on/off now. If your feet hurt from these boots after a few days of wearing, something is wrong. I ended up getting some Danner's Boot Dressing(Clear) to condition the boots today. I've used the brown color on my Danner hiking boots and it goes on nice. The clear does NOT discolor the leather at all. I used my fingertips to apply a thin coat, and rubbed it in. In addition, the Danner dressing has some water-resistant properties. That's good enough for these boots. I have Obanauf's LP for my other hiking boots, and I will not use that on the Chippewas. I dropped by the Red Wing store the other day and purchased a pair of leather laces for the Chippewas. The brown waxy laces they came with are OK, but I feel the leather laces look really nice with the Tan Renegade color of the boots. I also treated the laces with the Danner's Conditioner. See my review of the DANNER BOOT DRESSING (Protects,Revives,Prolongs,Conditions & Breaks in Boots) 1.7oz/48Grams (CLEAR) to see a picture of the boots after the dressing was applied, and laces.

A fantastic book that always gets compliments
First things first: the SIZING . I'm typically a 10.5 on the large size, so i was nervous about all the advice to half-size down (especially considering my feet tend to be a bit wide for a D, but E's are too roomy) There was also some people who confused the matter further by saying get your normal size and purchase an insole - i eventually bit the bullet and got a size 10. This was the right move. SIZING Get a half size down from your normal. When i first got the boot, they were snug across the forefoot, but not painful. I could wiggle all my toes and my heel had plenty of room (in fact, in thin socks, the heel would slip). Buying my normal size would have been way too large. They will feel snug (not tight) and rigid out of the box, try some different sock thicknesses, and as long as you can wiggle your toes freely and you aren't in intense pain, they will break themselves in. BREAKING IN Your mileage may vary, but by the end of the first 6-8 hour day they were mostly broken in. The snugness i felt out of the box was starting to relax and the shoes were comfortable. 3 days of average wear later, the sole had softened and conformed to my foot, and the snugness had disappeared, and they were well on their being everyday-wear comfortable. LOOK You cant beat the look of these boots with almost anything. I always get compliments on these shoes. If you take care of them, they age wonderfully, and never look beat up or ragged. Get yourself some leather oil or cream (i prefer Obenaufs) and clean em now and then and these boots will always get noticed. NOTES For people in colder areas, get yourself some warm socks for these boots. I don't wear them through the winter, but come the chillier days of New England fall, my feet need the extra warmth. The laces they give you look awesome, but a backup pair wouldn't hurt, as the eyelets take their toll on the waxed laces. Great boots, enjoy!

Great Boots!
I spend around 3 months researching American made boots. I looked at Red Wings, Thorogood, Danner and Wolverine. All of these brands are fairly close in price and are known for superior quality and wearability. I got to actually try on this boots (which I already knew ran 1/2 large for me) and some Red Wings. The Red Wings felt much more stiff, while the Chippewa's felt much more supple out of the box. I finally decided to hit the green light and figured as long as i wore inside for a few days, I could still return them if I didn't like them. It has been over a month and the boots are my daily wear shoes. They are incredible comfortable. I have never had arch support issues, so there is no issue with these boots concerning arch support. I normally wear 12/13, so I went with a 11.5 and they fit great. The leather has broken in nicely and the boot wears very well, both casually and more dressy. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and feel confident that I got what I paid for; quality and longevity.

Heels coming off, otherwise great boots
Updating my review - The heels of both boots are coming unglued from the sole! The boots show almost no other wear with near daily use, lots of walked miles in airports, project sites, etc, but sitting at my desk today I realized the heel has pulled away from the sole at several locations on both boots. Doesn't look like they are mechanically attached to the sole at all. They haven't failed yet but it looks like it won't be too long. Very unfortunate! I wear boots pretty much every day for work, including a lot of travel which includes going from business meeting to construction sites in the same day or same trip. These boots ought to straddle both the office and the field (if I can get away without a toe cap anyway). As has been said in other reviews, I went a half size down from my normal and the fit is perfect. I have narrow feet but like a bit of room in the toe and these boots fit better than any other pair I have owned except for some RM Williams dress boots I have. Hoping the eyelets aren't too much metal for the metal detector at the airport, one of the reasons I picked this style is because speed hooks typically do set it off. The eyelets make for a little more effort to get these on and off, but if I can make it through the precheck lane without taking them off it will be more than worth it.

Now I Want These Boots In Every Color!
First pair of Chippewa boots. These service boots look great and feel great right out of the box. I got the Crazy Horse and they're a shade lighter in color than the pics on Amazon. Still look great but mine are more of a greyish brown if that makes sense. No major flaws in construction and seem to be built to last. Anyways i'd say they fit true to size. My actual foot ,with socks on, measures about 11" or so from tip of longest toe to back of heel. I ordered an 11D and they fit like a glove even with a Dr Scholls Tri-Comfort insole added. No heel slip. I replaced the waxed flat laces with square leather ones just for looks though. Chippewa boots are impressive. With these quality service boots at a nice price, I wouldn't hesitate to collect them all!

Boot OK, Customer Support GREAT!
Usually I don't write reviews on things I buy on Amazon, but this boot is a special case. I was looking for an american made boot in good quality and Chippewa was my first choice, based on many reviews I read. The overall quality of this boot is OK, 360 Degree Goodyear Welt and a Vibram sole. On my pair of boots one heel-nail sticked out on the side of the sole, not the best quality control in my opinion. The leather on these boots is OK, it is oiled and small scratches will dissappear after brushing them. Overall I found the leather quality not satisfying for a >250$-Boot. It is quite thin and the colour changes really quick when wearing them. Some reviews say, this boot would be a "Red Wing beater", which I would definitely NOT agree with. Especialy the leather is not as nice as on Red Wings. The most concerning part of the boot is it's fit. Mine were sized 11,5 D and they were pretty narrow in the front of the boot but REALLY loose in the back. They did not support any satisfying heel support, even when I laced them really thight, there would be a lot of room in the back of the boot left. That caused a lot of blisters on my heel due to slipping around in the boot, so I had to return it. The boots were sized correctly, I usually wear a 12 in boots and my foot was pretty close to the toe cap. It's just the shape and cut of the boot that is a little weird. If you are thinking about getting a pair of these, order different sizes and try them carefully. The shape of the boot is not for every foot. I ended up returning them and going to a Red Wing store to get my feet measured and buying a pair of Iron Rangers which fit much better. They are worth the extra 30$. One side-note about Amazon's customer support: I bought these boots almost a month ago and wore them regularly in the office and at home. When the problem with the heel slipping did not get better, I contacted amazon and told them about my problem. They offered me to return the boots although they were worn! The boots were almost a month old but they would still take them back. I have never seen such a good and customer friendly customer support!

Gute Verarbeitung

Not at all worth the money
Really can't recommend these boots. Considering the price, there's far too many quality control issues. Weird stitching mistakes, the parts not aligning properly, etc Also, I sized down and they were still too big. I'll be returning them

Nice looking boots
Nice looking boots. Exactly what I was looking for. Treated them with mink oil and they showed a very minimal color change. Leather is quite firm at first but as any brand of boots, they all need break-in. All in all, I'm very satisfied as they stand so far. Will see how they age and weather over the next year. Hopefully well.
