Nikon COOLPIX L840 (Black)

I got the Nikon L840 to replace my Canon SX-520HS for general photography. So I decided on this Nikon L840 camera. I have now had this Nikon camera for over a year and now can give a decent review on this Nikon camera. Pros: Nice 38X optical zoom lens, exposure controls, easy to use, great sized rubberized hand grip, nice tilt-out rear LCD view-finder, takes SD cards, uses 4 AA batteries, has really good battery life & takes a pretty very good photo indoors [with flash] or outdoors in full daylight conditions. Cons: It feels so cheap with so much plastic, the auto focus sometimes is a bit slow, cumbersome menu system & no mode wheel on top of the camera since there are very few manual settings this camera can do. Overall photo quality seems quite good with this camera. Indoor photo quality with flash & outdoor photo quality in full daylight are actually quite good for me. Taking photos in low-light conditions is a bit harder with this camera & photo quality drops considerably unless you use the flash, but none of my digital cameras really never took a halfway decent low-light photo anyways. Digital video quality is great. It has wi-fi for those that use it. Overall, I am very fairly pleased with the photo & video quality this digital camera produces. I have had similar Nikon "P series" digital cameras including Nikon P-500, P-510 and a P-520 and this L-840 from Nikon compares better against the P-500 and P-510 and equals the P-520 in photo qualities. I am rather pleased overall with this Nikon camera. If you need a fairly basic, larger, inexpensive digital camera with a decent-sized zoom that takes pretty good photos & fairly easy to use, I think this Nikon digital camera is about the best you can find in the price range and compares very favorably to similar Canon digital cameras including the SX-510HS [30X optical zoom] and SX-520HS [42X optical zoom] in photo qualities. I gave this Nikon digital camera 5 of 5 stars because I simply think it's a great basic super-zoom bridge digital camera. UPDATE: I have now had this Nikon L-840 for over 7 months & overall photos are pretty good still, no change there. Indoor photos are still very good and really a periodic issue with the "freezing up" of the camera and me removing and reinserting the 4 AA batteries once in a great while is the only problem that has popped up. No other issues and the camera is still working pretty good. I kept the rating at 5 stars because nothing serious has happened yet with this camera for me.

I have nothing bad to say about this camera. The zoom is capable of bringing in a clear picture of a bird sized object at over 100 yards. The Wi-Fi is internal to the camera and works perfectly moving my pictures from the camera to my cell phone. A small downside to the Wi-Fi is that it's a bit difficult to set up, that said, it's really not that difficult and once in place it works perfectly, you do however, have to download the Nikon app onto your cell phone. I have gotten perfect photos without the flash in a darkened environment. The HD quality videos you can take with this camera are crisp and clear. The camera is lightweight, compact and is ready for use within a couple of seconds of turning it on. The camera has the capability of taking several photos one after another with almost no reload time between each photo. I looked at a lot of cameras, for the price this is certainly one of the best. If you're a professional photographer, I don't think I could suggest this for you. If you're like me, a person who likes to be able to take professional looking pictures without carrying around a load of attachments this is the camera for you.

I did quite a bit of research before deciding to buy camera. I want to start off by saying that I did not buy this because I wanted to start doing photography. I bought this camera because I want to start modeling, but I needed a decent camera in order to take pictures. I also wanted to start dabbling in the art of YouTube, and this camera has 1080hp. I started taking some pictures as soon as I got it. Mind you, it was horrible lighting in my room and the lamp I have gives the room an awkward glow. The pictures didn't come out too bad, but they weren't exactly the quality I wanted. That being said, I was in a different room last night with low lighting and the picture I captured was not bad at all. I also took some pictures during the day and I can say it was much different. Another thing I had to realize was that pictures don't always look too great until after you edit them. Once I edited the pictures that I had taken I was in love with my camera. So again, I'm giving this camera 4 stars and not 5 just because I wish it would do a little bit better with low-lighting. Aside from that, its wonderful. It has a chunky grip to it which makes it easier to hold and it's just a beautiful design. Love it, and hopefully you will too!

Note: I am a novice. I'm still not knowledgeable (or aware) of all the functions of this camera. The smaller size and lighter weight of this unit are big pluses when traveling. Very easy to set up and get shots quickly because it is not as bulky as other makes/models of cameras. Easy to use buttons, and intuitive. Best feature I've discovered so far is the zooming. Example: from shore in Bar Harbor, ME, took picture of a lighthouse, on a tiny island (egg rock, I believe). Need a steady hand to do it, but the camera has incredible zooming from such a distance. Can get shots of hummingbirds with remarkable detail (and those little guys are hard to get to sit still and pose!). Still trying to figure out why the zooming function is a little finicky. (I suspect I'm choosing a setting not suitable for what my intent demands.) Depending on lighting conditions, size of objects in the foreground and background, sometimes the camera has a hard time determining what to focus on exactly. I've noticed this difficulty mostly in overcast weather, with monotone colors abound (gray, brown, taupe, with almost no distinction in lighting conditions between closeup and far away). Overall happy with purchase.

Great camera for the price! I bought this camera as my first camera while learning photography and it has done nothing but help me learn the art. It is a lot easier to learn on a bargain camera, because you can see how far you have come and it makes you realize it just isn't he camera. While yea, you will get great photos with a great camera, but it isn't just the camera. You need someone knows how to use it. As someone who uses it for automotive photography, it is like learning to be a race car driver. The best great car drivers didn't just hop in the fastest cars and start practicing. They practiced in slow and cheap cars when they first started. With all the pros, there are some cons, but I put the cons are things you aren't paying for. The video is good, but the audio sucks, and there is no microphone jack to attached to it. The focus isn't the best in the camera, but it is doable. Also, it is a bitch when it comes to indoor photography. But all in all, I absolutely love this thing. While I will probably upgrade sometime in the future, this will always be a camera I will have close to my heart.

I'm the chief editor for my current and previous school's yearbook and take a lot of photos, over 4000 per year. I've stayed with Nikon cameras since my 1st, which was a Nikormat purchased around 1970. I've upgraded through the years and use a D50 that I've had for about 8 years. It's a real workhorse and takes great pictures. It does get a bit heavy, especially with a 17-55 F2.8 (more than the camera and two lenses cost me when new!) The principal okayed my purchase of the L840 so I can leave my D50 at home. I'm looking forward to seeing just how well it performs. The added ability to shoot HD video is a real plus since our students do video projects from time to time. The big movable screen is a real help with my eyes not being what they used to be. The only fault with the camera is that it uses AA batteries instead of a rechargeable battery. We'll see how that works out. I believe it supports the use of rechargeable AA type batteries. That will help.

It looks nice and feels good in my hand while carrying it . . . It seems to have all kinds of different settings for different circumstances . . . Maybe a professional photographer could tell you what they all mean but I can't. I just wanted to buy a nice camera for my vacation. I like to go hiking and I wanted to be able to take some really good nature pics with a really good camera . . . I should have saved my money and just stuck with my old Fujifilm. The main problem with this camera is that it seems to have a digital auto-focus that can't be turned off . . . Even though there is a setting in there that says to turn it off . . . There is no viewfinder, just a small digital screen . . . So I would sight in a picture by looking at the screen and everything would be picture perfect and clear as a bell . . . And then I would push the button to take the picture and everything would go fuzzy . . . I got 10 blurry blob pics of a chipmunk in the forest . . . You'll have to take my word for that because the pictures themselves are so bad that you really can't tell what it is you're looking at . . . The chipmunk was very accommodating and willing to pose for the photos . . . The view in the digital screen was beautiful and clear . . . And then I pushed the button and everything changes to crap. This problem seems to be more and more prevalent the more you are using the zoom lens . . . Which kind of defeats the purpose . . . The big zoom lens was the major selling point for me . . . After all, the chipmunks are only going to let you get so close and I don't want to get any closer to the bears than I have to in order to get a good picture. This problem occurred over and over again on close ups and on zooms . . . I tried various settings . . . I tried turning the auto focus off . . . I don't get it . . . I really want to say that this camera sucks . . . But it's probably just a matter of me not being a "professional" or "experienced" photographer and being unable to decipher the settings. Or, maybe it really does suck. In any case, I wish I hadn't bought this camera. And I don't recommend it to anyone.

I did a lot of research on camera's less than $300. It came down to two. Nikon L840, and Fuji S9900 camera. I own a Nikon SLR film camera, and the images it produces are outstanding. I took a chance thinking that the digital cameras might have similar quality images (crisp focus, bright colors, good resolution) and that to me is the most important feature. When I got the camera I took it out of the box and started shooting. They weren't. The pictures are good, but with 16MP, you should be able to get amazing pictures that you can blow up. I bought a Fuji Finepix almost on a whim, ( on a trip to Australia ), because I didn't have one of my own and didn't want to pass up the opportunity. It took outstanding shots from the first picture. It continued until returning from France, it disappeared on the trip. After that I bought another camera I thought was made by Fuji, and it's pictures were ok. When the mode selector started to fail, I figured I would get another only this time be sure it took great pictures. Now I wish I had tried the Fuji S9900. I still haven't gotten back to what my old Fuji (12MP) could take in terms of image quality. Do not mistake, the pictures aren't bad. I think they are as good as my daughter's Cannon Rebel. ($800), but they are not as good as as my phone (Samsung Galaxy 5), or my former Fuji. Features I gave up were a viewfinder (I use that a lot), built in panorama mode (I love that feature). I like the Nikon, but I would trade if I could.
