A .22 LR shell is nearly 5gr. exactly. More powder isn't necessarily better. A little less powder, a tightly rolled, quarter sized rolled of paper towel (makes a good wad) the tighter the louder, and I use .177 nickel coated lead balls from Mini Cannon Technology because heavier= higher muzzle velocity=bigger boom. Measuring less powder and a tight wad can give you louder and more accurate results if you are consistent. Mini Cannon Technology has a The Reenactor cannon on Amazon, you can get a brass ramrod with it, and they have balls, and fuse. If you use a cotton swab wet on both sides with alcohol to clean the mortar barrel after each shot, and a dry swab after, you will have better, more repeatable shots with no fouling. This is MOST of my collection, I practice a lot...
