Good for beginners
I bought this around 8 years before I bought a pedal steel. The accompanying CD is a recording of the floppy record that the original printing of the book had. The sound quality is not good. The sound of the cd put me off the idea of playing pedal steel. This was a mistake on my part. The quality of the cd in no way reflects the sound of a modern pedal steel. The information in the book is good for beginners. In no way is this the bible of pedal steel. There is so much more to know beyond what's covered. This and the DeWitt Scott method are the only worthwhile books in print. Beggars can't be choosers!

Pages falling out of brand new book!
I ordered this book but ended up returning it. The first few pages weren't bound in properly and fell out as soon as I opened the book. I exchanged the first copy, but the replacement had the same problem. It's apparently some sort of product run defect. Since this is really a reference book for a pedal steel beginner, I couldn't accept a copy that was falling apart before it had even been used. For this price, I expect a book I can be opening and referencing many times.

A well sourced book
What I like about this book is that it's historical, in that it includes pictures and stories about steel players from the 50's-60's -70's and 80's. It includes tablature which is very helpful for people who don't read music ( like myself ).I have adapted the 10-string tab to work for my steel guitar which is a 6-string ( just remove the notation for the top 2 strings, and do likewise for the bottom 2 strings). For the most part, that works. Also, the book describes the use and purpose of the pedals, the knee levers, the volume pedal, and the slide, which other books don't include. Also, some of the songs included in the text are "old standards" which most people have heard sometime in their life. This is good because when the student plays the song, they know if it is correct or not, unless they are tone deaf and therefore probably won't do well playing an instrument, which is unfortunate but true.

Book is defective
This is the second copy of the book I was sent. The first one, which I’m returning, had a defective binding. None of the pages were attached to the book and they all fell out. This second one has the same problem. Each page is detached from the binding. Very aggravating since I really wanted to use this book. I guess I’ll have to figure out some way to attach the pages together, but for $25, I shouldn’t have to. I can’t comment on the content or quality because THE BOOK FALLS APART AS I TRY TO READ IT.

Others that have read this book and have been using it as a guide to playing the Petal SteelGuitar find it to be one of the best
Since I don't own a petal steel guitar, I will probably never read this book from cover to cover. I purchased this book because I was curious as to how this instrument is played. However, browsing through this book, I find it to very through in technique. Others that have read this book and have been using it as a guide to playing the Petal SteelGuitar find it to be one of the best books written on this subject. I agree with that opinion.

Saved me from quitting
I started with another book, had a tough time moving forward. - and that's with some lap steel experience! I threw up my hands and bought this one as a last resort - glad I did! He's a good writer and provides enough contextual info, which is helpful to someone like me. Very pleased, was able to play more than I ever thought in just a few pages!

The first book for a great many E9 pedal steel players
This is the first good steel guitar self-teaching manual, and in many ways it's still the best. It discusses how the various types of pedal mechanisms work, how to tune a steel and how to troubleshoot problems. The lessons take you from simple melodies up through some nice arrangement. Last, there's a collection of the copedants (pedal setups) of a great many notable players.

Very helpful and good value.
Excellent product. Concisely written and laid out in a logical format. There is no doubt that this will be a great aid to any newbie . I would have given it five stars if the photographs had been printed more clearly, but they do look like photocopies of photocopies in the printed version and therefore are not the sharpest of images. All in all, well worth the dosh, and very much better than being ripped off by a pedal steel teacher who will want to charge stupid amounts of money for an hours tuition.

Solid Steel Stuff!
A superb introduction to someone embarking on learning to play the Pedal Steel Guitar. The book comes with a CD and quite a bit of music tablature which covers many traditional songs. Although the book was written a in the seventies, it's still up to date and full of great playing tips. I highly recommend this book! With a single one-to-one Pedal Steel Guitar lesson potentially costing well over one hundred pounds, this is a great helper! Go for it and do not be put off by the complexity of this instrument.

Winnie Winstone's Pedal Steel Book
This book was recommended to me by an experienced player as being a good primer and long term development tool. In other words it will take you further than just the very basics. As a complete beginner on pedal steel I agree with this ( so far). There is a wealth of clearly presented information on tap here that you can really use. I just wish there was a DVD to go with this as I like to see things being done to help me learn. So I would say buy it but you might want a DVD as well.

Pedal steel guitar book
This book was first published back in the 70's, and the floppy 7" record that originally came with it has been now been replaced by CD.
