GREAT travel backpack for "shorties" like me.

I bought this backpack for a 1 week trip to Peru. I was super pleased with how much stuff this pack held and how sleek and compact it was. I'm 5'2" with an athletic build and it fit me perfectly. Felt really comfortable on my back and shoulders while I was walking around. My only wish would be for pockets on the hips but it's not a big deal. I would highly, highly recommend this pack.

    Great Pack For the Price

This is the updated version of the high sierra summit 45 shown in the url below:(http://www.amazon.com/High-Sierra-Classic-Internal-27x14x7-5/dp/B004EBLCEE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409166366&sr=8-1&keywords=high+sierra+45)While I cannot speak for the older version, this pack is well made, and is an incredible value. I went to a local EMS store to try out a comparable Talon pack (which was twice the price at $160), and it didn't fit me nearly as well.My only complaints: there aren't many compartments, which could have made accessing my stuff a bit easier. Also, the top +10L portion jiggles around a little. Overall though I am very satisfied.I was able to get away with taking it as carry on for ~6 flights, with no trouble, but it is definitely a close call.Definitely get this pack.

For the rugged traveller... who wants to carry-on his/her gear.

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2015*

I searched for a long time for the perfect backpack for my needs. Here was my criteria: durable bag, affordable, different compartments for organization, simple/sharp design. Lastly, I needed to be able to carry it onto a plane, so cinch straps to compress the contents was a must, the color black was preferred (will explain below).I tested this bag on a two week trip backpacking through Vietnam. It was only two weeks, but it was quite the gauntlet to run this bag through. We traveled almost every day, rarely staying more than one night in a certain location. We took almost every type of transportation available: puddle jumping planes, busses, trains, taxis, motorcycles, boats and good old fashioned hiking. We were caught in torrential down pours, spent hours in the baking sun. The bag was thrown around, rolled down some stairs, acted as a seat and footrest, etc. All this just to say I used the bag.First thing I noticed when I got it was how durable it felt. The ripstop material is thick all around, and it is heavier than I anticipated. There is a LOT of webbing-- I recommend you make the fitting adjustments you want, and then trim down the extra feet of webbing provided. This can honestly shave off a pound of weight, and make you a bit more agile without tons of webbing flopping around all over the place (which I hate).Next, it's comfortable. I'm a 5'7" 150lb male, average build. Knowing how to adjust your pack to fit you is crucial and I recommend checking out YouTube to see how it ought to fit. I also recommend watching a video or two on how to physically pack your bag and how you should try to distribute your gear. Lots of people will get a bag and do both of these things wrong (it's not exactly intuitive) and will blame the bag for being uncomfortable. That's hogwash. Load your gear correctly, fit the straps correctly, and I guarantee you won't have quite as many issues. This bag fit great.Pockets for organization are great. You have your bottom compartment which you could fit a sleeping bag in (20 degree bag by itself). Since we were in vietnam, I actually fit two sleeping bag liners in there for my wife and I, my flip flops, belt, and some other miscellaneous things I knew I'd want on the fly if needed. It's quite spacious. The main compartment is pretty large and fit everything I needed pretty easily. I actually only packed this bag 3/4 full- there was about a foot of space left at the top of my gear to the brim of the main compartment, but I'm a very light packer. Outer Map Compartment was great to use. Stored maps and non-essential documents in there, along with pens, a moleskine and my kindle paperwhite. Brain is nice and big. Just a simple compartment-- would have liked an extra mesh zipper pocket in there to help organize small things. So, was I able to fly carry-on? Yes, without a glance, the several times I flew with it. This is obviously going to be different for each person, but I would be confident to take this on planes. The cinching straps did help compact my gear and slim the overall profile of the bag. Most American airlines today will not actually weigh your carrying on bag. It just can't be "too big" as they look at you, and it obviously needs to fit in the overhead compartment (which it does just fine). I said earlier I wanted a black (or dark colored) bag-- black looks smaller. I know this is silly, but if you're as vehement about having all of your stuff with you on a flight then you'll take every extra advantage you can take. I've lost enough luggage to want to avoid checking a bag (especially internationally) for the rest of my life.I threw some bungee on the brain through the provided holes and it's a great place to stash your rain coat or extra floppy gear. I clipped my climbing shoes to the outside of my bag with a caribeener. Also, the pockets for water bottles are great: they fit a large 32oz nalgene just fine. Carried one in each for most of the trip. It never felt out.Overall, I would definitely recommend this bag. It's not as light as you can get, but it's not unnecessarily heavy. I feel that the added weight comes from extra durability, which is a fine tradeoff for me. If you're counting ounces, you might want to spend some more cash and look elsewhere. If you're counting dollars like me, need a fully functional backpacking bag, and might want to consider using it for airline carry-on travel... this is your bag.
