Q: Can this be used for crafts?

Certainly can ! It is funny that you asked in fact. Because it wasn't even out of the box 5 minutes before I had already used it on a craft project that I am currently working on. Let me tell you it far exceeded my expectations that I had . It was perfect for my needs . I am very very overwhelmed and more than satisfied with this torch! I would recommend it to everyone with crafting , cooking , metal working ,mechanical , plumbing and so many other task that are in need of a heat source.

Q: Does it not come ready to use?

You need to buy butane like the kind for cigarette lighters. There is two kinds of filling tubes; short and long. This unit uses the long. The the instructions show which type to use. Or just take it to a smoke shop or hardware store and they help you out.
