what is the purpose of the notch on the inside corner? most carpenter/framing squares nowadays have one

Hello Mr. Santoku. One of the reasons that the notch is there, is so that it can act as a pivot point, when trying to lay out or draw arches, curves, or circles. Some people tap a nail in that area, or an awl, or a center punch. To hold it in one location, while doing this type of work. I hope this helps. This one here is of fantastic quality!
