Our family has enjoyed and highly recommends all the "Pandemic" variants. They are all cooperative games in which the players work together to solve a common problem. High quality components and excellent game design make these games delightfully re-payable.

I waited a little before purchasing this new expansion, as I was still having plenty of fun with the previous expansions. While I'm glad I waited, I'm much happier now than I could have imagined. When I first read about this expansion before it actually came out, I was a little wary. It seemed silly, and didn't seem like it would add much compared to the previous expansions, but State of Emergency has everything.Not only does it have a couple of new challenges that are fun, and quite a bit more difficult... it also adds several other elements to make prior expansions easier/ more difficult, and the ability to combine the two difficulty level changers in order to simply add more variety.While I really enjoy the new challenges, I will most likely be playing the prior challenges with the new elements. It's amazing to see how the emergency event cards make even the regular base game (which I had no reason to play again until now for added difficulty) more fun and challenging!As another has commented... yes, there isn't really any 'added' room to fit everything into one box... but personally, I've never fit everything into one box. Between 4 boxes for storage, there is no problem with having enough storage room. If really needed, I'm sure it could easily be combined into two boxes.Another counterpoint to a prior commenter.... yes, new material. Which is a GOOD thing, in my opinion, as some of the color pieces are so close in color, it's a bit difficult to tell them apart. Which that in itself is the ONLY negative thing I can even think of about the pandemic games.Another wonderful thing about this particular expansion, is that you don't need the prior two expansions for compatibility. The rulebook provides the play and rules for this expansion alone, along with tons of varying points in case you do have the other expansions. I believe that I now have enough variety and choices of pandemic games to last me for years to come with all the additions of State of Emergency!

This expansion to Pandemic brings a few more Roles, Quarantine markers, and 3 new modes to the game: Superbug, Hinterlands, and Emergency Events.The Superbug is pretty hard and I rarely use the Emergency Events; not because they are bad but because the game is often quite difficult as it is. The Emergency Events will throw out a rule when drawn like "No More Direct Flights) and the Superbug makes you gather vaccine doses from a factory you build to cure infected locations.I enjoy the Hinterlands a little more because it adds 4 new locations to the map. The tokens to add to the board are a little obnoxious in size and could be replaced with little stickers or Tiddlywinks. The new Role cards are great but there are only a few and basically only useful to parts of this expansion. (The veterinarian is completely useless unless playing Hinterlands.)The best part of the expansion that is now used in all my games of Pandemic are the Quarantine markers. You can now quarantine a location as an action and it blocks an infection at that location twice. Overall, I really enjoy this expansion (as I enjoy all expansions for this game) and recommend it. If you can only afford one expansion, this is not the one to buy; get the expansions in the order they were released: On the Brink, In the Lab, State of Emergency. ...in my opinion.

I have no played the Original Pandemic, Season 1, and Season 2. We love Z-Man Games and play frequently enough that we decided to buy this expansion pack. The expansion pack is well thought out and fun, but I might be too spoiled by Season 1&2 that I felt that this was a little too boring.I'm coming to the conclusion that I purchased the games in the wrong order. I wish I bought State of Emergency, Season1, and then Season 2. I feel like you get to build up the expectations of the game in a gradual way, but I had such an amazing experience with Season 1&2 that State of Emergency felt a little flat.I like that there are new roles and capabilities. There are also new cards, actions, new boards, and pieces. You can also play the game in 3 different ways, each one is challenging and different. There are a lot of different new rules that you have to memorize, but it's easy to get the hang of after a few runs of the game. If you love playing Pandemic, then the State of Emergency definitely adds some new excitement to an old game.

At first, when I opened the box, I thought I was missing a lot, but turns out it doesn't come with much. What you get is out of synch with the high cost for this expansion. It is a set of good variations, but even after playing and enjoying I'm left with thoughts of how much it cost compared to what little you get. As to the actual game mods, I tend to enjoy any and all game mods without overanalyzing. If you like Pandemic you'll like this variations/expansion set. I suppose the biggest advantage is that this expansion will expand your thinking and encourage you to make your own house rule variations to basic Pandemic - If you think it, you can play it -- to get the most out of your Pandemic.
