A step down for Okuma
I have used the 303D for a wire dipsy setup for great lakes salmon trolling. This reel has a couple issues that make it, in my opinion, less desirable than the Convector 30D, which is less expensive, and the Clarion 304D which it sadly replaced.1) The drag is not smooth. When setting a wire dipsy, you want it to play out slowly and smoothly. This reel's drag sticks. You loosen, loosen, loosen, then it takes off! Try to fine tune and you just cant. Too much hysteresis in the adjustment.2) After just one year of use, the line counter fails to engage after reset about half of the time. Very frustrating to let a bunch of line out, look down at see the counter still sitting at '000'!

Don't listen to negative reviews
Great reel, bought one myself, buddies bought a few too. We all think they are great, and anyone who didn't research the reel beforehand on size, or doesn't know "L" means left, should stck to fishing with a cane pole. Used on Lake Michigan for salmon and did well, except for few fish. Not the reels fault, blame Dennis. Has enough drag for big fish. We bought on sale, still a great reel at this price, but u could wait til it is on sale. Nice grip on handle. No complaints so far, don't think you will be disappointed!
