Can this be installed in a vertical position?

I can tell you what happens when this is installed vertically, the lid cracks and sewage leaks all over the basement floor! My plumber installed it vertically when my house was built 1.5 years ago. It only took 2 guests staying in the basement for the lid to crack.

I have a drain in my backyard which i tie my drain into this sometimes backs up can this be used for this purpose.How much pressure to open it up ?

I think it will work although there is no gasket, unless specs have changed since my installation! There could be some leakage. It takes very little pressure to open!

Is there a neoprene or other seal on the flapper to provide a positive seal?

It is made out of ABS and has a neoprene ring just like the flapper in the valve.. The screw on top - access plug -also has a neoprene ring.
