Great light for low tech plants, perfect for rimless tanks
I have a 20 gallon long that I removed the plastic rim on and this light is perfect for my setup. I have S. Repens, Dwarf Sag, Hydrocotyle Tripartita, Marsilea Crenata, and some dwarf hairgrass and this light is giving me slow healthy growth. Since my tank is only 12" high, the light needs to be just right to avoid algae. I have zero algae, although I will admit I do inject CO2 which helps with algae for sure. My Hair Grass isn't doing great tbh, but it's not a low light plant period. I have had these lights for years and find them to be perfect for low light plants. I wouldn't try to grow anything else, it just won't work. No gimmicks, simple on/off switch which works perfect with an external timer, which many lights don't work the same, you have to go into the settings and reprogram everything every time the power is switched off or they are on 24/7. The legs are nice, clear plastic that fit perfectly on a rimless tank and can be secured, unlike the cheap black metal legs that come with many other lights. Have had them for years, no problems, worth the money imo, highly recommend.

excellent value lighting
This Finnex LED light has been a fantastic addition to my 55 gallon fresh water tank. It came well packaged, and has worked flawlessly for the past few weeks. I recently went from a tank that had closed fluorescent hoods, and a hang-on filter, to glass tops and LED lighting. Its obvious that I did a few major upgrades. The good: Super easy to set up, super easy to use, and super bright (compared to any other light I've used). If you are looking for something to use with plants, there are better options, try the Planted+ models. Not that this thing wouldn't work for plants it probably would but as I understand it, plants like the wave lengths that the red LEDs put off, and this doesn't have many of those. For a normal non-plant aquarium, this thing is quite nice. Its super thin, so as the ad says, its almost invisible, seriously. Remember when you got your first LCD tv after having a CRT all those years, and that giant space that now sits behind the tv seems like a void? That's exactly how this will make you feel when coming from fluorescent tube lights. The cost!! This is the cheapest Finnex light out there, and its worth every single penny. It also comes with a bunch of mounting solutions, so you have a few options as to how to set this light up.The bad: It doesn't make me coffee in the morning, it doesn't do the dishes, and it isn't much help at trouble shooting network issues. In other words, I can't find anything that isn't good about this light.Long term update: 7 months later, this light is still going strong. I even dunked one end of it into the tank while cleaning, stupid me. It survived without an issue and keeps on ticking. It functions exactly like the day I took it out of the box and set it up. I would reccoment Finnex lights to anyone. They make them in all sizes, so quit messing around and buy this thing already.

Good, but not perfect.
The light output really is good with a nice tone that looks very natural. It really seems pretty neutral with no shift toward any particular color. The fixture itself is small and thin which really makes it disappear on the top of your tank.Sounds like I like it,so why only the four stars instead of five?First the hard wired transformer. I am guessing Finnex has a lot of faith in the quality of transformer it uses since it is not a simple removable item. Most other fixtures have a barrel connection in line that allows for easy transformer replacement. This is one of the most common issues I have seen in LED lights is that these cheap transformers burn out. Hopefully this one lasts. The other reason I like the barrel connection in line is the fact I recently started to use the Current USA Ramp Timer. This item goes in line between the light fixture and transformer and gives a nice dusk/dawn effect when it turns your light on and off. With the hardwired Finnex I can not use this anymore and have to use a plug in timer instead.Second issue, the clear plastic clips included to have the fixture sit on top of the tank. These look good and are designed for a number of different tank rim designs. They even let you remove the inner part for larger frames. Thats great but, they dont tell you anywhere on the box or instructions HOW to do it. It is a clear plastic and looks obvious but it really is not. It has a little C shaped clip to the part that needs to be removed a certain way that you really can not see. You bend it outward and it comes out but you feel like its going to break something. In fact I wonder how many will be broken by people trying to figure it out. Instructions on how to do this should be somewhere.... if in my eagerness to get the light going I missed it, please post a comment for others where you found it.Over all very happy with the build quality and light output of this unit but would not have bought it if I knew I would no longer be able to use my ramp timer. It is a good product but not perfect. If Finnex had decent instructions about their clip and if it had a removable transformer I would have gave it five stars.
