Good marine combo lock
These programmable three digit locks are really the only ones that work in a marine environment.

A great gym lock that's easy to set and hard to defeat!
I needed a lock for the gym and wanted something that wasn't easy to break or easy to "pick". Lots of the more common combination locks have numerous exploits that are easily learned from watching videos online. I wanted something that wasn't necessarily overkill but that also didn't scream "this one is easy to open!". This lock seems to be it! The four digit combination is nice as it presents a potential thief with 10,000 possible combinations instead of the 1000 that the cheaper three digit locks provide. Even if somebody wanted to sit there and try every possible combination and they could average two seconds per try it would still take up to almost six hours to find the right one (if they have to go through most of the combinations... figure 3 hours if they only have to go through half). A three digit lock only takes about a half hour to go through all the combinations under the same conditions. The lock is a nice heavy metal construction (208 grams on my scale) and has a nice shine to it. You'll be able to easily spot your locker! Changing the combination is super easy too. Once the lock is open just use a coin to twist the dial on the right side all the way to the right, set your new combination, then spin the dial back. Done! If you're looking for a decent gym lock or a decent lock for some other purpose then I highly recommend this one!

Setting Combination Could Have Pitfalls
I have about six of these locks, and they are reliable. However, the last lock I purchased had an issue. Set the combination according to the directions; now the lock does not open with that combination or the default combination. It is useless, and I did not find out until after the Amazon 30-day return policy. However, I emailed the company, ABUS, and they have sent me a new lock. The process was painless.

Issues Setting Combination
I previously purchased one of these locks, and it has worked great for well over a year. However, I purchased a second lock in August 2026, and after following the directions on the packaging to set the combination, neither the new combination or the original factory combination work to open the lock. I returned the lock, and the replacement has the same issue. The newer locks have a slightly different design (taller, raised on the right side) however the serial number is the same across both versions. Be warned the newer version may have issues with setting the combination.

Sturdy as can be for a 4 combo lock - great for the gym
This lock brings me a lot of peace at the gym, knowing that any would-be thieves would go to other locks before this one. I'm not a lock person, but I did a little research and found ABUS to be a reputable brand. This lock lives up to that reputation in my opinion. It is heavy and solid, and locks/unlocks cleanly. Changing the combo was an easy process, and can't be changed accidentally. Can't go wrong as a gym lock.

I like it because it's shiny, and my only complaint is that it's shiny.
I wanted something a little different for the gym locker, this is a little different. Every lock review I read included reviews with comments about defeating the lock... be realistic, anything that can be described as a "padlock" isn't for securing anything that absolutely has to be secure. Forget somebody sitting around for a few hours trying every possible combination, if somebody wants through this or any other padlock, they're going to do it in seconds with bolt cutters. It's a shiny, handsome, "please don't bother my stuff" request to be posted, and in most circumstances, respected by others. My only complaint is that it's shiny... haha, which means that if you're the type that often leaves fingerprints and smudges on phone screens, etc., you're going to leave fingerprints and smudges on this lock. Appearance aside, this can also lead to your fingers slipping on the dials some, especially if you're also sweaty after a workout. No big deal, still seems to be quicker than the old MasterLock dial spinning for me.

Dials move free and numbers are big
Got this to replace my Master outdoor lock for my patio gate. This is much better with larger number and the dials move free without jams. What I like best about this design is the dials are by the side of the lock instead of bottom like many other locks. With the dials by the side there is no need to turn the lock upside down, making it easier to dial in on the numbers, especially when you need readers like me.

A great choice for reasonable security but don't want to remember a key
My use for this was for a storage locker that I never seemed to have the key for when I wanted it. You see I don't carry every key for every last thing I own when I just want to go out in the car. Then I just want the building key and the car key, nothing else. However, car trips tend to generate things that need to go into my storage locker, and of course, I might be out when my other half wants to go in there. All of this in mind, a good, thick combination lock was a decent choice. After some research, this was the most suitable Abus lock for this purpose. Four digits was important to me, as opposed to the somewhat more common three digits. I matched the lock to the strength of the locker, in other words, the lock is a bit (but not much) stronger than the cage bars you can see in one of the photos. In a lot of contexts, you're basically trying to ensure your lock matches what you are locking. Here I'm satisfied that's suitable for a my storage locker (which itself is behind a locked door). Unlocking is as simple as putting in the correct combination and gently pulling, re-locking is pushing the lock closed and spinning the combination dials to a random setting. This lock should resist cutting to a reasonable extent, but I'm under no illusion that it's entirely impregnable (no lock is, and for that matter, almost no container is). However, I'm very satisfied that this lock will do what it claims to do, and gets 5 stars as a result.

Stiff to operate
Easy to recombination. Difficult to get it lined up to lock. I use it on a chain and you have to remove all side pressure on the shackle to get it to lock. Over all a good product I would buy again. A squirt of WD-40 helped it work a lot easier.
