Can this be used to paint a vehicle?

Yes... IF you take your time! Don't pretend to paint it as fast as it could be done with a Professional equipment and a larger compressor, but it can be done, certainly.To help this compressor reach the desired results, try to optimize your installation: Use at least 3/8" I.D. hose not too long (less than say, 30 ft.), good full diameter fittings and a large enough (Flow wise) filter-regulator. The modification of the Air inlet filter on the compressor that I mentioned in my comment also helps to achieve a little more flow out of the compressor. Before starting to think about using this compressor, do check your paint gun CFM requirements, but being careful you can "administer" your air usage and then complete the fullcar painting. How would this fair in an attic? i want to place mine up there. it gets cold in indy in the winter. garage is insulated, attic is not?

Speaking from experience with a Campbell Hausfeld in an unheated garage in northwest Ohio, if it gets cold enough, the pistons in the compressor will not seal properly and will not compress the air. This can easily be corrected by use of a heat gun, hair dryer, or propane torch to gently heat the compressor head for about 20 seconds or so if you see the gauges failing to read any pressure after running for a few moments. After that, the compressor will keep itself warm simply by running. You may want to reconsider the attic if the compressor will be someplace hard to reach and performing the above fix will prove difficult.
