Replace when they understandably get too grubby. As others have suggested, the sizing seems to have shrunk a bit. While I bought the same size as I've bought all along, in the last ~ 2yrs the sizes seem to have shrunk. Next time (and there will be a next time) I'll be reviewing what folks write looking to see if a larger one is warranted still.In the past this hat has worked wonderfully for me, keeping me cool and comfortable with no sign of sun exposure to my head. It seems to almost collect breezes, and almost feels cooler wearing it than not (for instance, in the shade). This new hat seems stiffer than older ones, and like that as well! It could probably fit a 7 1/2 head without being too tight unless there is a size difference between hats of the same XL designation.Second, I was a little disappointed as the whole hat has a "plastic" feeling and a little stiff, but knowing the price of real (felt/cloth/leather) hats versus this one, it is acceptable.Third and most importantly, I was looking for a hat to replace my caps for when grass cutting and doing yard work. The brim is nice and big. It does an excellent job for me in keeping the sun out of my eyes and off of my neck from the mid-morning, mid-day and mid-afternoon sun. That was my primary purpose in ordering this hat. And the size was just right.
