How long does it normally take to filter the water? Is there a proper technique to install it?

With the ceramic pre filter, the water takes about 4 hours to filter through. Folks use this pre filter with the worse city treated waters. If you do not have the manual then contact use through the buyer-seller so that we can email you one.

Should this filter be able to remove food coloring? note: does it, is not the question i'm asking. should it be able to?

I do not know that answer. I do know I would never run anything but pure fresh water through my system ever.

Is this better than the sponge? What is the micron rating?

The ceramic dome is better than the sponge but it is extremely slow at letting the water pass so I’m assuming smaller “pores” than the sponge. For me the sponge got pretty gross quickly.
