Vocabulary is becoming increasingly important for the 11 Plus, and it helps to devote sufficient time to it, as it takes a long time to build an effective vocabulary. 500 Advanced Words for 11 Plus Vocabulary is the second book of the two part set of 11 Plus Vocabulary books, the first one being 500 Essential words for 11 Plus. Together, these two books comprise the most comprehensive 11+ Vocabulary preparation tool in the market. This book contains over 500 Advanced words that appear frequently in the 11 Plus, and uses some of the following techniques to help you remember these words faster and better! - Word Roots; Since many English words are derived from Greek & Latin roots, it makes sense to be aware of these. Knowing a single root can help you know a whole group of words! - Prefixes/Suffixes; Pay attention to the tone of the words, whether soft or hard, harsh or mind, negative or positive. This could help you guess when in doubt.Prefixes/Suffixes can often help you with identifying the meaning of a word, when in doubt. - Usage of the Word; Perhaps the Best way to increase your vocabulary is to read and practice. There is absolutely no substitute for that! Reading helps you learn new words from the context in which they are used, thereby making it easy to remember the new words and more importantly, how and when it is used. This book provides you with multiple examples of how a word is used in different contexts. With over 1000 practice exercises, you will get more than enough practice for the 11 plus! - Synonyms/Antonyms; Being familiar with related words, increases the number and variety of your mental associations. This helps you retain the meaning of the word more easily. - Related Words; In order to ‘deeply’ understand the meaning of a word, it is helpful to study related words at the same time. e.g. The word plenty connotes “sufficient for what is needed” while abundance means “more than what is needed ”. - Pronunciations; Each word has a pronunciation key that helps you say the word out correctly, thereby aiding retention. - Practice makes perfect! Finally, this book has over a thousand exercises to make sure that you remember the meanings of the newly learnt words ‘forever’! Many ingenious methods, scientifically correct, have been devised to aid in the remembering of particular facts. These methods are based wholly on the principle that that is most easily recalled which is associated in our minds with the most complex and elaborate groupings of related ideas. All of the above methods are designed to create a word network in your mind, thereby helping you develop a lasting understanding of the word in the 11 Plus relevant context. One of the Best books I’ve come across for vocabulary Building.
This book is just what you need to build vocabulary in young minds. It is very well structured as every word has its usage along with its meaning. The author has described how to pronounce the word and has provided synonym and antonyms which helps the child to relate to fimilar words. Best thing I have liked in the book is that there are plenty of excercises such as matching a word to its synonym and fill in the blanks to complete a sentence, this builds confidence for using the word. At the end of the book there is also a bonus link to avail complimentary material for furhter enhancing your childs vocabulary. I would highly recommend the book for anyone who is preparing their child for 11 plus.

11 Plus Vocabulary – 500 Advanced words by J Johnathon
11 Plus Vocabulary is full of advanced words and memory exercises to enhance your child’s language skills proactively. Enhanced vocabulary is obvious to any assessor, giving your son or daughter the better grades needed for education and further study. After a brief introduction explaining word use and synonyms, 11 plus vocabulary offers exercises of 12 words per stage, explaining their correct pronunciation and effective use for correct communication. Each stage is ended with a test to review the child’s learning and understanding. The great use for 11 Plus Vocabulary by J Johnathon is the level of interactive learning the exercises present. It’s a foundation for a pathway to future learning, with exercises in a teacher student scenario which enhance communication in many ways, helping your child with vital communication skills for primarily writing, focused towards talking and understanding building a method for language processing and interaction as a whole. Advanced words are introduced throughout the book like Premeditated and Prevaricate. Having read and reviewed the book myself, being an adult writer, my vocabulary has been added to and foundations reinforced. All the words presented here to your child are explained in different contexts, pronunciation and examples of incorrect use are given, showing the student language example best avoided. Usefully at the end of book exercise answers have given to allow for easy marking and reviewing for the child’s performance. Overall this is complete exercise and will form a foundation which allows your child to further explore the world of language confidently and progressively, leading to further advanced skills and tasks, plus enhanced 11 Plus testing results. High recommended as a build block towards excellence.

Great book!
I am very impressed with the depth and structure of the book. From the start, the user is given tips on how to make the most out of the book. One of my favourite aspect of the book is that it provides detailed information about each word – pronunciation, the origin, the meaning and how it should be used. This will help to enhance your child’s vocabulary and spelling as well as build their confidence with their use of the words, sentences and conversations. There are 43 word set sections (verbs, nouns and adjectives), which ends with review exercises to test their knowledge (with focus on Synonyms, Antonyms and usage/missing word.) The answers to the questions are provided towards the end of the book, which is very helpful. There is also the bonus of getting complimentary material to help you child prepare for their exam e.g. memory methods and study methods. Overall an amazing book, that will also be great for adults who want to improve their vocabulary.

Good content but possibly too advanced for the 11+
The content of this book is excellent and well laid out, but possibly daunting for 10-year-old children. The words are maybe too advanced and unlikely to come up in the 11+, could overwhelm a child and parents.

My eldest is taken by the book.
Recently, I am having to purchase a couple of vocabulary books for my kids, I have had to add this to the list and my eldest daughter who seems taken by it. I spent the whole of yesterday listening to the new words that she has learnt the past couple of days and the fact that I am having to be schooled of their meanings. She seems to prefer learning new words now than actually reading a novel I purchased sometime ago for her and I credit this book for it. I applaud the author who took the time to put these together. The competition between my kids to learn much more will see me buying up more and more of these vocab books. Excellent for 11 plus Vocabulary prep and beyond!

Highly Recommended thorough learning resource
I recently bought this as a gift for one of my foreign friends getting ready to take the IELTS. The book is very concise and covers a huge range of vocabulary. I found it very user friendly, and considering the age range itʼs aimed at not too overwhelming in regards to the explanations and details. The only thing I would say is that some of the phonetic pronunciations seem quite accent dependant, however this seems to be the simplest way to highlight the word sounds for children. I would recommend to anyone looking to boost their childrenʼs vocabulary in time for a test, or for people who are learning English as a second language.
