You've tried everything. The pain keeps coming back. Stretching, strengthening, massage, injections—maybe you've even had surgery. But your back pain persists. Or it goes away for a while, then returns the moment you least expect it. Here's what no one has told you: Most chronic back pain isn't caused by weak muscles or a "bad back." It's caused by hidden movement patterns that keep pulling your body out of alignment—patterns so subtle you don't even know they're happening. In Fixing You: Back Pain (2nd Edition) , award-winning orthopedic physical therapist Rick Olderman reveals why traditional treatments fail—and shows you exactly how to identify and correct the real problem. Find your pattern: Pain worse when standing, walking, or arching back? Diagnosed with stenosis or spondylolisthesis? → Chapter 4: Extension Problems One-sided low back pain or sciatica down one leg? SI joint dysfunction or piriformis syndrome? → Chapter 6: Side-Bending Problems Herniated or bulging disc diagnosis but treatments aren't working? Pain when bending forward or slumping? → Chapter 5: Flexion Problems What you'll discover: Simple self-tests that pinpoint YOUR exact pain pattern in minutes Why your pelvis and rib cage alignment matter more than your "core strength" How to retrain your body during everyday movements—sitting, walking, bending, sleeping The hidden postural habits keeping you trapped in the pain cycle Bonus: Every exercise comes with video demonstrations. Enter the code inside at www.rickolderman.com and follow along with Rick step-by-step. Why does everyone give you the same advice? Stretch your hamstrings. Strengthen your core. Lose some weight. Try acupuncture. Maybe all good ideas—but they don't work for chronic pain because they treat isolated tissues, not movement patterns. Your back pain isn't random. It follows a specific pattern created by how your whole body moves and compensates. Fix the pattern, and the pain resolves. Keep treating individual tissues, and you stay stuck in the cycle. This approach works even if: You've been in pain for years Physical therapy didn't help You've been told surgery is your only option X-rays and MRIs show "abnormalities" but treatment isn't working You're skeptical because nothing else has worked After 30 years of clinical practice, Rick has helped thousands break free from chronic pain. If you've been told "this is just how it is" or "you'll need to live with it," this book will show you there's another way. Your back pain has a pattern. This book will help you break it. Review: It will fix you - The Back Pain book helped me tremendously. My lower back pain is gone, I can walk up stairs, sleep and sit with little pain. What I found different about this book from others: 1) specific explanations of movement patterns that cause major back dysfunctions and pain. As much as we don't want to admit it and work on it, how we move affects muscles and bones and affects pain. Rick's explanations are very clear. I've read many articles/books that are either too dense and I don't understand it or say do a certain exercise without explaining what's being worked on. Rick explains things in a way I can understand and when I do the exercises I know what I'm working on. My friends are amazed at my knowledge of muscles and movement now. 2) the best illustrations and explanations of how muscles work and are affecting the back pain that I have seen. 3) specific exercises for specific back movement issues. Very clear exercises that also say what muscles are being worked and problems resolved. You can also get videos of the exercises that are great. 4) suggestions on how to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs. This helped me tremendously because as much as I don't want to work on my everyday movements, they are contributing if not majorly causing my problems. Even if you don't want to do the exercises (although they will help you), this book will give you an understanding of what's going on with your back that you may not have seen elsewhere. I refer to it again and again. I've given the book to friends and will continue to refer people to Rick. Review: Good, but not perfect. .. - Fascinating structural explanation by the P.T author about why back pain may be occurring and not too difficult exercises to fix things. 4 stars given because I thought the exercises should have been organized differently...I would have grouped them according to standing and floor activities. Getting up and down constantly makes no sense. Also, this book would work better if it had a video demonstrating the exercises accompanying it.

Buy this book first. Don't waste your time or money on the other ones. Still pain-free after two years! Thanks, Rick!
I have the first edition too. Rick has added more exercise illustrations and links to helpful videos in this new edition. If you want to WHY your back hurts - this is the only book that will tell you not only how to fix the pain, but why it hurts. Doesn't matter if it's an old injury, or you've already had back surgery, or some other excuse, Rick will help you to feel better. He saved me from being an invalid because of pain when physiastrists, pts, and doctors could not help at all. (I did not want surgery because, if you do the research you will find, it doesn't always help the pain, doesn't deal with the causes of the pain, and sometimes makes the pain worse.) Buy this book, do what it says, you will be thankful the rest of your life for Rick Olderman. If your back hurts - it's the only book you need.

Bit boring.
I think this book is a bit unnecessary - it’s the sort of thing you’re going to buy when you are in that panic of just discovering your back is messed up - possibly for life. It’s not going to help much. The best option is to see a physical therapist who can give you exercises tailored to you and your specific condition. Even if you just go once.

the turn of the femur born
I have not read the whole book. This part helped. I always wondered why when I walked I drifted to the left. I found out that is because my femur bone is turned outward from flaying my legs outward when sitting as a kid. I have a difficult time sitting cross-legged. His suggested about the turning the right foot out helped so much. I have had far less problems with my back bothering me. I cannot believe one simple adjustment made such a difference.

Saving Me From Back Surgery
I had two issues going on at the same time: 1. Bulging disc at L4 and L5 and a narrowing artery in my left leg, which stopped me from walking more than a few hundred feet. I had an Angioplasty which opened up the artery and now I could address the back pain. This exercises in this book are doing what an Orthopedic Surgeon, Neurosurgeon and Cortisone shots could not do and that is relieve my back pain. I have been doing the exercises recommended in Chapter 4, Extension Problems every morning for the past 4 days and I could not believe these simple exercises (Trapezius Release, Back Arch series, Tummy Arching, could relieve the back pain from a bulging disc but they did. I have been using my cell phone to watch the videos on his web site while I am on the floor (cushioned pad) learning the exercises and it has really helped in learning how to position your body so that you feel the muscle contractions Rick is instructing you to feel. I will be adding additional exercises as I master the technique for each one. Thank you Rick Olderman for your ability to transfer your knowledge to others. I am so grateful.

Very Technical!
Technical is good for Technicians but a little too advanced for an average mind! I was able to understand it but had to take a little more time with it than I had expected when I ordered it!

The light at the end of my tunnel
This book has changed my life,my chronic lower back pain has improved in 2-3weeks from using some of the exercises and advise from the book,I am still in shock and I don't understand how come I've never been explained by the vast majority of physiotherapists the basics of why I get the pain...This book was a miracle that came my way and I can not be grateful enough for the fact that I accidentally found out about it on the internet...Thanks dr Olderman 🙏🙏🙏

excellent livre d'analyse

Worth a read! The genius of the book is in its simplicity!
This book is truly amazing because of the simplicity with which it explains the various musculoskeletal behaviour. Rick has nailed down the balance of being technical and yet explaining things in an easy way. The accompanying videos (links to his website) are very clear and help in carrying out the tests and exercises in a proper way. I chanced upon this after more than 6 months of living with the sciatic pain resulting from bulged discs in the lower back. Though the physiotherapy has helped me make a remarkable progress in the past 6 weeks, I was drawn to this book as I still had some unanswered questions. I struggled to understand why my gluteal sciatic pain would still persist despite some very good physiotherapy. Rick provides such a lucid explanation of things with easy to follow tests, It made me realize certain seemingly minor corrections that I need to make in my standing, sitting, walking posture that can have such profound impact on my situation. Using these tests, I was also able to acutely reproduce of the problems that I had been having. I have started following the remedial exercises. Its still early days, but it does look like it has answered some of the persistent problems. Even if the book is not able to help me get over my problem completely, its worth a read to understand what harm I had been causing to the body through seemingly negligible postural habits.

Simple and effective book which relieved my sciatica and joint pain!
I highly recommend this book AND Rick Olderman's latest book Pain Patterns which covers the entire body. He has discovered the root causes of our pains and has simple tests and exercises that empower us to take back control of our good health. The accompanying videos make it simple to understand and cure ourselves. I bought this book a year ago and it took me out of debilitating lower back pain and enabled me to walk again. Now I am working on shoulder and neck pain that have revealed a few more of my mechanical problems that are self imposed so I am re-learning correct posture and walking and feel better already after a week or so. I highly recommend reading Rick's books and watch him on YouTube - he's more than your typical Physical Therapist, this man has cracked the code on the root causes of your pain. He's exceptional!
