I received these teeny tiny balls a few days ago. They came in a soy sauce sized package. I opened it up and can only describe the smell as what I imagine the pits of hell smelling like. I ran outside and threw it on my front stoop. Took a few minutes to stop gagging and then found a tiny flower vase/ bowl thing to put some dechlorinated water in. Went back outside and dumped the little rat balls into it. Left them outside for a few hours, changed the water again. No more smell. Mine are kind of green, like a tree just starting fall . I’m not a quitter(seriously bored right now and need a project), I won’t give up but I’m not putting these in my tank until I know their healthy. I’d say go to Petco or Persmart and get some. Don’t put you olfactory senses though the torture!!! The things we buy when we are quarantined, I need an intervention.

I didn't read the reviews talking about the smell. It smells sooooooooo bad. I'm gonna soak it in water and change it out every once in a while keeping it in sunlight to see if it can recover. If it still smells after a few days there's no way im adding it to my tank. If I had to describe the smell, if you ever drove next to a huge cow farm on the highway and roll down the window, THAT smell.EDIT: I washed these a few times throughout the day and let them soak in clean water in indirect sunlight. When I drained the bowl I smelled them and they didn't stink. My suggestion for anyone buying these is to open them in a well ventilated room or outside and to let them soak for a day or two in frequently changed water so they can recover from being packaged. Mine were all green so if you had discolored ones, it's probably already dead and you should throw it away.

Do not buy this brand. Poorly packaged. When I opened up the package I was met with a horrible, rancid smell. No way was I introducing these into my tank. These are supposed to help detox a tank- these would have ruined the environment:-/ I have purchased moss balls from other sources and they arrived as they should- bright, fresh smelling, and spongy and do a great job of enriching the tank.

Horrid smell. I have ordered dozens of moss balls over the last 2 years and the only ones that have ever smelled like this are rotten and mold the water. Disgusting and I will not be using these for my retail items or for my fish tanks. One fell apart immediately upon rinsing. They’re also a very dark green and EXTREMELY tiny. Do not order these!!!!

Mine must have gone bad in the mail. They smelled like rotting feces. I gagged until I vomited. Not joking. The most horrible thing I have smelled since we found a dead sheep in the creek in 8th grade. I am disgusted.

Packaging said would be in with water to protect in transit. Moss balls were very hot and barely wet. Once put in the water they disintegrated to almost nothing . Horrible product would never recommend

My husband stated they stink before opening the package, but I didn’t smell anything. Upon opening the package I commence to have several minutes of dry heaving due to the horrid smell! It’s the middle of winter and we had to open the windows to air up the house. Returning and will try purchasing from a local pet store and if that doesn’t work I will try a different brand. Absolutely awful!

Horrible, fowl smell! It was not a 6 inch bag. It was more like 2 inches. The miss balls are tiny. I thought they sent the wrong item at first. Opening the bag made you gag. I'm sending them back. No way would I put them in my fish tank!
