When our children were small, they loved "Abbie, Keep the Fires Burning." Now we discover a more mature accounting of the true story of a young woman (not little girl) who kept the lighthouse going while her entire family (including her father, the lighthouse keeper) were very ill. Beautiful illustrations, and a more thorough story is presented, stretching the interest in the book by several years. A good book for home school families, public and private schools and just good family reading.

Wonderful story of achieving self esteem and confidence

Beautifully illustrated and told with language that young children can understand, this book is a marvelous telling of a young woman's work as a lighthouse keeper during one of the worst storms in a century.Abbie's courage and determination to go on and continue in her work despite the horrors she faced and the difficulty of having to do it alone and care for her sick mother and sisters on a dwindling supply of food was an inspiration to me and would be to all who read this.I loved this book. A read well-worth it!

Wonderful, wonderful book! I've read it to all my kids and have recommended it to others. Get it!

Abbie is a young girl who actually lived in another century. Her lighthouse did not have electricity but only whaleoil lamps. This made her job of polishing mirrors so important. The book describes the storm so well that you can almost hear the wind howling. Her courage in fighting against the storm and saving her family and her chickens are things that my grandson will relate to. The pictures make even an old person love Abbie Burgess because they illustrate her bravery.
