Diamond 580 Fountain Pen nib B

I like fountain pens. I have a couple of lovely Mont Blancs but wanted to try out an inexpensive italic nib. This pen looks great with the see through body and the nib writes beautifully. Doesn’t seem to leak and the piston systems works well.

Great pen, screw cap breaks. This is my third one, great writing, piston filter, great bang for the buck. Unfortunately the plastic nature of the pen means that it breaks if you drop it.

I find the Diamond 580 to be totally worth the price. The nib is smooth right out of the box. I have two of these: medium and fine nibs. I love them both. I've tried several pens over the years nothing comes to the TWSBI Diamond 580 experience for me. The TWSBI Eco and the Pilot Metropolitan are in second and third place for everyday carry. Also, I'm a graduate student (and I'm not wealthy😅), so I need a pen that can works well and can be carried around campus without worry about theft.

The TWSBI Diamond doesn't need a review. This is like reviewing iMacs: we all know. Like Apple products, it has some foibles centered around sacrificing practicality and bumping the price for the sake of aesthetics that don't seem to get equal press as its positive qualities, simply because there are so many positive qualities. For this reason I'm going to go ahead with a hopefully objective review in case this is the first page someone thinking of buying one has landed on. The Diamond's attractiveness (holistically, not just aesthetically) varies quite a bit depending on how you look at it: First, on a scale of fountain pens on the whole, TWSBIs are almost suspiciously inexpensive. They haven't made one that costs more than $100, despite their use of piston and vacuum fill mechanisms usually only seen on much more expensive pens and very few of them at that. And, unlike those, the 580 is fully disassemble-able, comes with silicone grease, directions for maintenance, and a wrench to take it apart. The most important quirk as I see it is the redundancy its size creates for its ink storage, especially for those just using it to write. I know, bear with me: The 580 is long, wide, and heavy. It takes up a lot of room in a pocket or purse. + Unpostable + Fear of losing the cap somewhere + Diamonds' history of cracking problems = It rarely leaves my desk, where it is never more than inches from a bottle. ans+ I don't do anything at my desk that requires great lumps of ink without interruption like calligraphy or illustration. = Why the extra capacity? Finally, from a utilitarian standpoint (yeah right), there are two thorns in TWSBI's budget-plastic-piston-filler side as well, and those are the Konrad and Nib Creeper pens from Noodler's (no affiliation). Structurally, both are very similar to the 580; piston mechanism, easily disassembled, the works, but are notably not as flashy, more versatile, and each only costs around $20. I own a Konrad and it's superb. I'm okay with the extra cost though. I think most TWSBI fans know they're/we're paying extra for that TWSBI x factor. And let's be honest, in real dollars it's not all that much extra. I use the 580 almost every day; it's a sublime writer. I love that it looks like a 23rd century thought-powered gravity-resistant laser syringe and that what puts it in that category also sacrifices its usability. There's something charming about that disregard of practicality. It's like a klein bottle silly straw. The problem with reviewing it really is that all its quirks and TWSBI oogliness remove its resemblance to other fountain pens and thus compare/contrast against the whole becomes more like weird apple v. all oranges, like quantifying cost per non-usable unit of TWSBI-ness beyond what makes it a justifiable purchase on paper. But since Diamonds can only function in their own self-created/inflicted quirk vacuum, their gravity-resistant properties, though impressive, are largely superfluous with no gravity to resist.

Had this a few weeks and it's a great pen. Writes really smoothly and feels solid in the hand — no complaints about the performance at all. Two things worth knowing before you buy. First, $55 is a real commitment for a fountain pen if you're not already deep into the hobby. Not outrageous compared to high end stuff but it's not an impulse buy either. Second, double check your nib size when ordering. I accidentally grabbed a 1.1 and replacement nibs run about $23 each, so getting it wrong adds up fast. If you know what you're getting into it's a solid pen. Just go in informed.

This has turned out to be my favorite fountain pen despite the fact that I own several that are many times more expensive. It looks pretty cool, it has a good weight to it, it writes quite smoothly (fine nib), and it holds a LOT of ink. I've had this one for over a year now and it has NEVER failed on me; not even a little skip! I did clean it thoroughly before the first use and I clean it every few refills but I also do that with all of my other fountain pens and some of them are just a huge (expensive) pain in the rear. I let this pen sit on my desk at work for 3+ weeks while I was on vacation and it wrote flawlessly when I picked it back up. The clip has a good amount of flex to it and seems resilient; I've intentionally bent it MUCH further than it would ever need to bend in normal use and it just snaps right back into place (the end is still making contact with the plastic of the cap). The only down side to this pen is that it doesn't "cap" very well. While you CAN technically attach the cap to the bottom, it's clearly not meant to go there. For me, this is a non-issue... just be warned. HIGHLY recommended!

so i read up on fountain pens, and this one was rated really well. i have had mine for over 3 weeks. i did none of the suggested prep (like washing it out and greasing it before use) but it has had no issues for all three weeks. i just filled it and started writing (don't worry about removing the air bubble in the reservoir, its gravity fed and unnecessary). it writes amazing! the line is comparable to the gel pens i usually buy (.05 mm) and thickness can be varied slightly with pressure. i am not a avid writer and the pen sits for days with no issues, like no flow, when i do use it. just keep the cap on. when i do use it at work, i use it pretty hard and it has never failed or had issues with intermittent flow or drying like other cheap ink cartridge style fountain pens i've tried. the secret is the screw on cap that has a double gasket to prevent drying out. i can't see a more expensive pen performing much better, honestly. AND it even came with a cool little wrench and a little container of silicone gel for maintenance. i still haven't used up the first fill of ink (noodler black, which is waterproof) either. i would imagine that single $12 container of ink will last me the life of the pen. (things tend to disappear from my office... dang thieves) oh and i read a review where someone said the cap doesn't stay on the top while writing, and that is somewhat true especially if you write with a flourish. not a huge deal, as the cap on top makes the pen pretty heavy and unbalanced when writing (just put the cap in your pocket or off to the side).

This is my first TWSBI pen purchase. The packaging was very well done, and the pen arrived in perfect condition. The pen is constructed of crystal-clear plastic, with what appears to be polished stainless steel accents. The pen is of substantial size - a bit over 6 inches capped. As a caution to potential buyers, the pen is really not practical posted; it is very long and unbalanced posted. I disassembled and cleaned the pen with mild soapy water before use. The pen writes very smoothly, and the stub nib gives a very nice formal quality to writing. A somewhat more vertical style of writing brings out the quality of the nib. I have tried two inks, both by Noodler's, and both worked well. There was no staining inside the barrel from either ink. I would not recommend the pen for rapid note taking or in situations in which very small writing is required, as writing a bit on the large side and with a little flair really makes use of a stub nib. One real advantage to this pen is that TWSBI offers a number of nibs that can be interchanged. I like the look and feel of the pen so much I immediately ordered a fine nib for more rapid or small writing. All in all the pen seems well-constructed, is easy to fill, easy to clean, and writes very nicely. Highly recommended.

I love this pen, it writes smoothly, it feels comfortable in my hand and holds a large amount of ink. This has been my everyday carry ever since I bought it. However the TWSBI ECO is very similar at a much cheaper price and is also a very nice pen to write with.

Good but it feels cheap

✅ Remplir le réservoir est très facile, et la capacité est très grande. ✅ Dans ma vidéo, je montre et j'essaie de faire entendre la douceur de l'écriture. Pas de graatements, pas de frottements, et la pointe ne "chante" pas. L'écriture se fait sans efforts et sans bruits. J'aime vraiment cette expérience. ✅ Je trouve que les accessoires, y inclut le boitier qui peut facilement faire office de présentoir, sont tous d'Excellente qualité. Et le fait d'avoir inclut la graisse de silicone contribue à faire de mon achat une expérience vaiment agréable. 👉 En faisant le test d'écriture en retournant la plume (à 0m59s dans la vidéo), j'ai été un peu surpris de voir que la plume n'arrivait rapidement plus à écrire. C'est un peu surprenant vu le prix et la qualité de la plume, mais pas du tout un bloquant. 👉 Le capuchon pèse 13,5g et la plume 14,5g. De toutes mes plumes, c'est la première fois que je suis face à un capuchon aussi lourd. C'est surprenant au début, mais je me suis rapidment rendu compte que j'aimais l'équilibre que ça apporte quand la plume est "postée". 👉 Le réservoir a survécu sans dommage à l'encre Baystate Blue qui est reconnue pour malmener les réservoirs. Ça donne une bonne idée de la qualité du plastique utilisé. 👉 La pointe "F" de TWSBI est à peu près identique à la pointe #6 "M" de Jinhao (l'écriture en rouge dans la photo et la vidéo). Verdict: 5⭐

Ho preso la TWSBI 580 diamine clear pennino F dopo una lunga indecisione tra questa e la versione AL, che ho letto essere più robusta. Ho scelto questa perché esteticamente la preferivo (starò attento...). Attualmente stavo usando una Lamy Safari F che è eccellente. Non amo le penne gioiello da centinaia di euro, preferisco penne sobrie da usare quotidianamente in ufficio. La penna è bellissima e scrive bene. La ho rodata con il Pelican Royal blues per poi passare al Diamine Asa blue. La biro è eccezionale è bellissima. L’inchisotro determina il colore del fusto. Da considerare. Il tratto è fine e preciso, ma ogni tanto il flusso è eccessivo. Inoltre ogni tanto ha false partenze, ma molto di rado. Avendo già la Lamy F, avrei potuto osare una M. Magari prenderò un pennino M. Dal punto di vista qualitativo è avanti di un soffio la affidabilissima Lamy. Questa vince sull’esclusivita, o meglio, sulla particolarità. Consiglio l’acquisto. Bellissima senza essere pacchiana o eccessiva.
