The float switch is normally open when the float/water level is down.

Yes, it is activated when the water level lifts the float up on its side causing the contacts inside the unit to connect causing the power to the pump to be activated. As the water level drops the contacts separate cutting the electricity. You set the float to activate by the length of the cord to water level.
