Earth Defense Force Fans might like this!
Fans of the old Earth Defense Force game for the Xbox 360 might like this game. Granted it doesn't take place in Tokyo and soldiers aren't dressed up like power rangers anymore, but the gamemplay and cheesy dialog are still there. This game features a 4 player online cooperative game mode and a 2 player offline split screen game mode and sports a new character class and level-up system. For those who've never played Earth Defense Force, the best way to describe this game would be to say that it is a third person, 100% arcade style shooter game where you run through stages filled to the brim with giant bugs and alien robots that will swarm like crazy and your tasked with the job of blowing them up with any weapons you have. It's an intense, chaotic, flashy, loud and semi-violent game that's more fun when playing with friends who just want to blow up bad guys and have fun fighting aliens that look like they came from a 1960's-1970's black and white horror movie titled "They came from planet Z!"Character classes each have their own special abilities and range from the traditional soldier who specializes in all weapon types but has no special abilities, An engineer class who has the ability to drop sentry turrets, mines and health stations at the cost of using rocket launchers, sniper rifles and assault rifles, a "Jet" class that uses a jet pack for quick maneuvering and energy weapons that are affective against mechanical enemies like "Hectors", and the heavy class which is the tank of the 4 classes, brandishing heavy weapons and having the ability to use a shield that can block incoming attacks. Each character class can level up through use, unlocking new weapons and abilities, except for the soldier who doesn't have any abilities and instead increases his health and armor endurance with each level. Be warned though, this game suffers from "MMORPG" Styles of grinding when you get to higher levels. The game is sadly short with only 5 chapters, each one having up to 6 levels each, and features 3 difficulty settings and an extra game mode that changes up the standard enemies in each stage to make the game more challenging. I definitely recommend playing this game if you're the type that just likes mindless and intense, 90's arcade action style gameplay. There's just an odd sence of nostalgia that from from playing this game that I just can't get over and it takes me back to the days when I used to play Contra on the SNES and Smash TV at the arcade.Note: this game is also available on the Xbox 360, PC and Steam!

Another guilty pleasure
The first EDF was a bit of a sleeper hit. A throwaway budget title that turned out to actually be pretty fun.In the vein of games like "Serious Sam", swarms of ridiculous enemies flood the screen and the goal is to find the right weapon to counter each type of wave. Its was refreshing to see something so casually absurd in the era of "gritty" military shooters. Seeing a horde of giant ants swarming over skyscrapers is the type of escapism that more games should be about. This is one of the small issues I had with EDFIA, it takes on the monicer of a generic military shooter, the smae unfortunate rout Serious Sam BFE took. Though its all completely tongue in cheek, and intentionally cheesy (one hopes). Hearing cliche phrases "Oscar mike" repeatedly in yet another game, even one with giant bugs and robots, brings on the feeling of blandness that the original was such a pleasant escape from. That said, the gameplay and structure is very similar to the original, missions can be repeated for bonus weapons, and upgrades. There are truckloads of weapons, but many of them are useless in nearly every context. Enemies swarm and behave similarly to the first, and there seems to be a healthy variety of them. The environments are a bit more detailed, but so far, somewhat less varied. Most importantly; true to the original, buildings can be destroyed with one or two rockets.Welcome changes include co-op play, and upgradable armor suits; each with different styles of combat. For single player, you are given 2 computer controlled companions. They aren't the brightest, or most effective companions, but they seem to be competent in reviving you if you get knocked out at least.Overall I'd recommend it to those who enjoyed the first, or are fans of other "twitch" shooters such as Serious Sam, or Painkiller.

Review for the EDF fan only
Just received my copy of the game and played it for about two hours. If you were a fan of EDF 2017 and are waiting for the reviews to come in before deciding whether to buy the game, then wait no more.Quick points:- It is faithful to the "original". Big insects, giant robots, big explosions, and you can blow up buildings.- The graphics is on par with the original.- 2-player Co-op mode is in tact.- You can now choose different troop types with different abilities- e.g. flight, or shields, or automated gun turret.- Weapons and abilities can be upgraded with credits obtained from battle.- When you get killed, a fellow troop will run up to you and revive you, and similarly you can revive them.- Ants can now tip cars at you.- Ticks will jump on your back and bite.- Online gameplay is quick and easy to start up.- And yes, your troops chant "EDF EDF".Now stop reading this review and click Add To Cart. The game's awesome!Update July 10, 2011:Now that I've finished the game here are some after thoughts:- There are a total of 3 chapters each with 5 missions. So it's pretty short.- The game is still true to EDF.- The terrain is unfortunately not as diverse as 2017. Everything takes place in the city. I miss the subterranean levels in 2017.- Chapter 3, Mission 4 with the giant mother-ant is probably my favorite mission.- The ending was a bit disappointing. Would really have liked to take out the mothership. But I am assuming that will happen in the add-on content to purchase, or in the sequel.- I found the Flying character to be the most useful. His speed lets you evade most enemies, including the annoying ticks. Plus you can go UP if you are really in trouble.- I would probably play it again on a greater difficulty level and to get to play with the more powerful weapons.- Still a good mindless game after a long day at work.
