Although I was producing sparks right, it took about a half hour or so of practice to get the hang of starting a fire with this method. Once you get used to it, you're all set! The maker has YouTube videos easily showing the proper technique as well as many other tips and methods. The steel will last you a life time and if you learn how to identify the proper types of rocks you can find what you need in the field, it doesn't nessesarily have to be a flint stone. The steel is a must have but the kit is a great convenient way to get you started with everything you need. Having this in your pack could possibly save your life.
