Q: will these help with protection from tear gas?

It would be best if you had a gas mask. Simple classes will not protect you because your nose needs to be covered.

Q: Can the vent plugs be closed as a way to keep droplets out?

The vents can be closed as I’ve answered elsewhere. However along with keeping out the droplets you’re going to be limiting the air as well as raisiny the temperature. The only other I can think of besides as a very very fine mesh that will hold back water molecules,(they’re available), would be some kind of curtain that would come down over plug without sealing it. It sounds clumsy and there are probably a zillion reasons why the idea sucks but it’s the best I could do after a long day at work. Good luck.

You can hand wash in hot water and soap, or use rubbing alcohol.
