It weighs just a little more than a regular yard rake.

Great question. The answer would depend on the dryness of the sand. The dryer the sand the easier it will flow through the rake. You would need to take a light approach and try to remove the needles one layer at a time. Don't try to bury the rake and pull. The sand on the surface is usually the more dry. We get a lot of Cedar tree needles, seeds and small branches that fall, it works great for that. We have recommended our rake to golf courses, sand sport complexes for volleyball, etc. The military has used it for finding shell casings, etc, in sandy regions.I hope this information is of value.Charlie KaufmannShoreline Industries

One bolt to attach the rake to the handle. The box was about 5 feet long and narrow.
