Give children the social and emotional tools they need to grow and thrive on their own All childrenยnot just those with challenging behaviorsยrequire guidance as they develop the social and emotional skills they will use the rest of their lives. This resource provides everything you need to help children build and use six essential life skills: attachment, belonging, self-regulation, collaboration, contribution, and adaptability. Developed and tested in the classroom, this strength-based approach includes strategies, examples of supportive interactions, and special activities to help you manage challenging behaviors and strengthen social and emotional development in all children. Reflecting significant changes in early childhood education, this second edition of Beyond Behavior Management aligns each life skill with early learning standards and addresses cultural awareness and its impact on child development. With these essential life skills, children will exhibit more prosocial behaviors, work better as a classroom community, and become excited and active learners. Jenna Bilmes is an early childhood consultant and an instructional designer for WestEd Child and Family Services. She is a frequent presenter to teachers, administrators, and counselors nationally and internationally. Review: Fascinating, Practical, and Instantly Useful - As soon as I had finished reading the first few pages, I knew I'd found a gem. This book sets forth to explain how we as the role models and guides can help children learn the skills that they need to become successful adults. One of my favorite parts in this book is on page 248: "Children want to be happy and have a nice day. Some children just don't know how." If you struggle with "that" child with rough social interactions, has a hard time focusing, gives up easily on tasks, tantrums at transitions, pushes or hits others, appears to have never learned how to take turns, etcetera, etcetera, then this will be a very valuable tool. The basic premise is that children need to learn collaboration, adaptability, self-regulation, contribution, and feel attached and like they belong, just as much as (if not SO MUCH MORE than) they need to learn math, reading, and writing. These are skills like any other, and while we would not punish a child for not yet knowing multiplication tables, neither should we punish a child for not knowing how to gently join into play with several children at once. I bought this book for a class that I will be taking in the fall, but I have already finished reading it and I have introduced many of the ideas into my preschool classroom. I look forward to going through it again in the fall. Review: Essential for early childhood educators - I am beginning my first year teaching this fall, and I will have a kindergarten classroom. When I got this book I was so excited because it aligns very closely to my philosophies on behavior management. It addresses a wide range of issues that may arise and gives detailed, systematic information on dealing with those issues from a social/emotional standpoint. Besides that, the book is so easy to read and packed with valuable information--not a lot of filler material and redundancy. I literally completed this book in one sitting, because as soon as I began to read, I couldn't put it down! Since then, I have re-read several pieces from the text and appendices. I plan to use this as the cornerstone of my management system this fall.

A valuable addition to any teacher's toolkit
This is an insightful, clear and practical guide. One of the best parts? The appendices with scripts: "Instead of saying . . ." "Try . . ." or "When a child says . . ." "Try saying . . . " The change in teachers' perception and habits of speech, may "give children the social and emotional tools they need to grow and thrive on their own."

Awesome Ideas for Teachers
This book is well organized, easy to read and has awesome ideas for teachers to understand children ages Pre-K to Grade 4. I have used many ideas in my preschool and kindergarten classrooms with great success. There is also a quick reference guide in the back of the book which I found very useful and time saving.

Very much like Maria Montessori's method
This book is very good to fit into how America has chosen to run its school classrooms. It is very close to the International Montessori method, founded by Maria Montessori. Anyone who has ever read anything about Maria Montessori would know that these traits must be fostered for each child. The activities in the self-regulation chapter are straight out of the practical life area of Ms. Montessori's teaching. I advise getting this book if you are a traditional classroom teacher. Hopefully, you will have the time to do this with your children.

Best Book!
This is without a doubt one of my all time favorite books, the one I recommend most to others. I prefer edition 1 to edition 2. It helps one on a path of self discovery and improvement. A must read for any educator, and any parent.
