Great versatile road brake levers
The break levers are great. I installed these levers with new Shimano calipers to upgrade my 1988 Schwinn Traveler that originally had dia compe brakes. These Shimano levers work very well, are versatile, feel sturdy and look very nice. I would recommend these for any new or vintage bike. My bike looks very nice with these upgrades. The price is appropriate for the quality and built of these levers, so I can definitely recommend these. Shimano does not disappoint.

Great product at a good price.
This is a great replacement lever for an old road bike. It is much better than what was on there previously. The machining on these is great and they work perfectly. They were easy to install and have been a joy to ride. Definitely remove the grey plastic piece or glue it down, it does rattle on bumps. It is not as wide as the STI shifters on newer bike but they look sleeker. Good value when you factor in the included housing and cables.

Great Levers, just need to remove one tiny part
I read many reviews about these levers saying that they had a rattling. I received them and sure enough there was a small rattling sound when shaken. I knew it would drive me crazy to hear that constantly on the road, so I tried to figure out what was making this noise, and finally realized it was a small gray plastic part that covers the spring inside the lever. I assume it's there for a reason, but I can't decide what that reason could be. Either aesthetically to hide the spring or maybe to block it from having debris entering it when the brakes are depressed? Who knows. I simply got a small knife and popped them out--problem solved. You could probably super glue them down so they don't rattle too. After installing my NON-rattling levers, I could not have been happier. They are beautiful, the hoods feel great, and the included cables and housing are top quality. Lots of bang for your buck on these babies. Just takes about 5 minutes of extra work to get that rattly plastic out!

Good lever, but the design leaves it prone to rattle
This is basically the same lever as the 105s I’ve been using on my other bike since the early ‘90s. Excellent comfort and braking. Only four stars, due to the rattling internal parts that my 105s have never been prone to. I use these on a drop bar MTB that is mostly ridden on gravel trails. It’s a very standard process to install and they include cables and housings. For those wondering, standard road levers like these work fine with cantilever and U-brakes, which are what my gravel bike has. They will not work very well with linear pull or V-brake, because they have higher mechanical advantage and shorter pull than levers designed for linear pull brakes. I noticed the rattle on the very first ride. The washers on either side of the wire hook are a bit loose and able to vibrate, as is that small white plastic piece mounted in the shell directly above the wire hook. Some have removed that plastic piece. At this point, I’m just silencing the vibration with some grease on those internal parts.

As good as the BL-R600
These are perfectly adequate aero-style brake levers for your drop bars. As was mentioned in another review they do have an annoying rattle in the cable pivot mechanism if your cable is under light tension (or absent). I have a pair of these on my fixed-gear road bike, even though I only run a single brake caliper, as I enjoy riding the hoods. The hoods are quite nice for the price and fit my medium hands well. The rubber is soft and grippy without being sticky, and the hood can be "swollen" for larger hands with the addition of bar tape under the hood. The lever has a nice solid feel, unlike some of the cheaper stamped parts out there, and provides adequate feedback. Looking through Shimano's part diagram it appears all parts of consequence are shared between the R600 and R400 levers, and I am unable to tell a difference between them when riding. If you are not looking for an integrated shifter / brake lever set this is a great deal!

Classic, reliable, great for small hands.
These are the classic hand brakes used on bikes in the 1980’s. Superior Shimano, quality workmanship. In a world where hand brake/shifter combos have become absolutely massive, these reasonably sized levers and hoods are refreshing. Inner spring helps the levers snap back into place and easy, “aerodynamic” installation. Their diminutive size has to be more aero than the big clunkers on modern bikes. Oh, and they work great paired with Shimano 105 or Ultegra calipers. Great upgrade for any single speed, drop bar bike.
