Goblin Slayer: Season One [Blu-ray]

Dark but slightly sweet fantasy action - Additctive AND exciting
I first watched this on Crunchyroll and enjoyed it much more than I was expecting to. Then I bought the blu-ray set so I can watch it again and again. It's that good. The basics - This is the blu-ray set which comes with two blu-ray and two DVDs plus the funimation digital option. I have only watched the blu-ray version which has episodes 1 - 9 on one disk and episodes 10 - 12 plus the special features on disk two. The special features aren't that special and can be skipped without remorse.Soundtrack - I normally only listen to the Japanese soundtrack (with subtitles) and so can't comment on the English dubbing. The music works very well and carries the action sequences very well.Plot - The plot is relatively simple. A young priestess becomes an adventurer and joins a party of rookie adventurers on a quest to clean out a goblin nest. Turns out that goblins aren't an easy quest and the party is almost wiped out until the priestess is rescued by a mysterious adventurer who knows how to kill goblins. The Goblin Slayer is a goblin killing specialist and the priestess teams up with him to learn the trade. They are joined by a high-elf, a lizardman and a dwarf to go on tougher and tougher goblin killing quests.Commentary - The plot is relatively simple but don't be fooled. There is a depth to the characters that you wouldn't expect from an anime like this. Each character has their own motivation and whilst there's not a lot of character development the characters are well rounded and individual. The star, of course, is the Goblin Slayer who could be in a poncho and starring in a Spaghetti Western. The action is very well done and the sub-plots add to the overall arc of the story. A lot of this is clearly based upon isekai or fantasy RPGs so the setting will be familiar but this is darker, bloodier, more focussd than most modern anime. It will draw you into the story and keep you hooked until you realise you've binge watched the whole thing in one go and then want to watch it again. Conclusion - This is a stand out anime. It is dark without being too dark, it has action without becoming over the top horror and the interaction between the characters is honest and sweet without becoming too sweet. The humour is dry and sly and is woven into the plot with some subtlety. It's not quite good enough to topple Claymore from its top spot in my fantasy/action anime list but it comes verrry close. If there's a second season I'll watch it for certain. Highly recommended. If you like this maybe you'll like: Claymore, Jin Roh.

Goblins beware!!
The Goblin Slayer is one bad dude, taking out goblins with no remorse. The supporting characters add comic relief and variety to the show, since the main hero is so serious. Without taking it too seriously, it does resemble a D&D game, or even a computer game, the way they describe spell slots, uses and such. The show describes goblins as bad, they're all bad, and they need to be exterminated because they do terrible things. Not everyone will vibe with that part of it, but it's an entertaining polarization between good and evil, the animation looks cool, and the music in it is great all around. It is both violent and lude at times, but it's still done tastefully, and there's light hearted moments too. Great show, simple as that!

The other 99%
Goblin Slayer isn't for everyone, it's pretty dark. However, one thing that it presents is a glimpse into the outlook of lesser adventurers in a fantasy setting. The Goblin Slayer isn't the world's hero, or a hero at that. He's that single tracked officer of pain to the one thing that plagues people, but unjustly gets rolled over because it's "not romantic", goblins. These things are mean, greedy, and take whatever, where ever, and they treat people in one of two things; for men they're food, and for women, they're playthings. They are disgusting and he knows the only good goblin is a dead one. This anime first shows off what can happen to an unprepared group, and then shows what a properly prepped warrior looks like. Through the season you'll see goblins, monsters, and the sad truth of anger and resentment. I highly recommend this if violence, story, and a little fan service is your thing. Be warned, there are disturbing scenes.

Exactly how action-adventure should be.
I had my eye on this series for a while being curious of what I saw and what I was told about the series. Picked it up and never regretted buying it. If you love medieval themed, fantasy-based, rpg ideals within an anime, this is for you. I loved the idea of a medieval anime having nods to rpgs. It’s bloody, action-packed, funny as hell and even heartwarming at times. This is something I never would have thought that could captivate me so quickly. The acting is a little bit in the downside but the story, and character relationships are a great part of the series. The adventure and action is always awesome. Exactly how action-adventure should be. Highly recommended to anime fans. I certainly enjoyed. Although the season felt too short but oh well. It was well worth it..

A very good series, not for the faint of heart or for overly critical viewers
So I'm sure some of you have heard or know about the controversies surrounding this series. Don't let them dissuade you from giving this series a watch, especially if you're looking for a gritty and very mature action/adventure story. Sure some or a lot of the stuff that happens in the show will not sit well with everyone, but if you can look past those things, you may find yourself really getting into and liking the show. You just have to go into watching this with an open mind, to be honest. The storyline is good and interesting, the characters are memorable, you have lots of action and intrigue, the animation quality is really good, and the character designs are nice. Break through the negative reviews, reactions, and etc and give this a try. I'm pretty sure you can waste more time watching a lesser quality anime than this one.

Beware of graphic content
This is a great series with wonderful characters and surprisingly deep story. What starts out as a simple D&D parody gets serious as the dangers this group of adventurers increases. This show doesn't just give you fanservice and parody. This show deals with a surprising amount of serious subjects like rape, genocide, and the real meaning of friendship and honor. Really enjoyed this series as did my daughter.

An engineer in a fantasy world
After you get past the first episode, you see that the Goblin Slayer is an intellectual and a scientist. He's very methodical and careful in his actions, and gets things done. It actually has a lot of the same spirit as "Dr. Stone" or Ghibli's "The Wind Rises"

Best anime ever
What a fantastic show. It makes the goblins clever, devious, evil, smart and able to devise tactics like you wouldn't believe. The main character turns the tables on them a few times, and while the science behind some of his tricks might not be realistic, it's a great show. I loved it.These are my favorite Amazon purchases:- 2000 Piece Puzzle Ice Dragon by Akumorain- Icon by Frank Frazetta- Infinite Worlds by Vincent DiFate- Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

GOBLINS! What more can you say.
A show that I heard through the shock it caused and I dismissed however upon watching the first episode and moments even I found myself repulsed despite this I ensured I'd stick it out for at least two episodes as per any show to give it a fair chance. And well?I have to say it far exceeded my expectations the show displays a typical fantasy world but displays more brutal reality to it. A refreshing take that whilst including shock factors doesnt over use them, rather it displays a main character who is stoic and somewhat socially awkward and emotionally stunted due to his past and he vents his frustration by cleaning up what no one else will. Goblins.Seen as dirty and too weak for the higher up heroes to deal with the type of characters you'd see as the star of any other show, instead Goblin slayer makes it his duty to do what no one else will to spare them from the same fates that can befall regular villagers no glory here. The show has a great soundtrack and animation, likeable characters and a decent sense of humour at times so if your bored of watching a show about the over powered main character always winning the day against impossible foes why not give Goblin Slayer a go?
