Best bang for the buck!
After reading all of the reviews of this tripod and others like it, some more expensive, some less, I decided to buy the Slik Pro 700DX. My reasoning, for what I know of what I need for doing photography, mostly HDR, I need a steady platform.I read up on some lighter tripods, even the ultra expensive carbon fiber tripods, and even some of the light weight aluminum tripods, much like the one that I had before buying the Slik tripod. What I can say from experience, is that if you are a photographer, or wanting to become a photographer, having a tripod that minimizes vibrations, and shaking is very important, so when I read all of the complaints about this tripod being too heavy, I knew this was the right one! A heavier tripod greatly reduces vibrations, movement, and excess play, giving you the crisp, steady shots that come out beautiful, especially when using your auto bracketing function. When taking several shots of the same object at different exposures, it is imperative that your camera does not move, to ensure that you get the same frame in every shot. This Slik tripod, and its extra weight that the other weaklings complain about, does exactly that, it gives you the heavier base for ultra steady shots! Couple this tripod with a remote trigger, and you have the makings of a beautiful set up. Since I have received my Slik tripod I have used it exclusively, leaving my more expensive lighter weight tripod in its bag in the corner. Light weight is overrated! This may be just my opinion, however I am sure their are other experienced photographers out there that agree, you will see other tripods that look better because they come with other gadgets, like one I saw recently that had a compass on it. Don't be fooled! The extra gizmos are just a poor attempt at boosting sales, for instance why would you need a compass? Are you going to do a composition titled, northerly photos? Give me a break! All you need is a solid, steady tripod, one with decent height adjustment, like this slik, bubble levels to make sure you are horizontal when the shot calls for it, and the ability to be able to invert your camera angles for macro shots, all of the functions this tripod has! Eventually you may find that you want a different head, but unless you plan on doing moving shots at football games, the 3-way pan tilt head on this tripod is good enough! 99% of the time you will frame your shot, then take it, it's not necessary to have super fluid ball heads, and all the other gimmicks that will cost you an extra 3-500 dollars. Save your money for the important things like lenses, ultra fast CF cards, lighting equipment, etc... One other thing, I also saw several negative comments about the locking mechanism that holds the camera in place, some saying they didn't feel it is secure enough, trust me when I say the locking mechanism on this tripod is top notch! I lock my camera in and then grab the camera with both hands and lift it up with the tripod, and there is no wiggle room or slippage, I also do macros with the camera almost completely inverted, and have had no issues. The locking mechanism for the legs is top notch as well, they are not cheap plastic, and to the guy who claimed he felt like they would easily break, you would have to do something really stupid to break them! It would take a lot to break the locking tabs on the legs, I mean unnecessary carelessness, and roughness. Any photographer that knows what they are doing is going to take care of their equipment, no matter how much they paid for it. Take care of your equipment, and your equipment will take care of you when it is time to take that award winning shot! I highly recommend this tripod, and for those new to photography who are looking for their first quality tripod, you will not find a better tripod for this low price! Trust me I have looked. I found absolutely no negative qualities for this tripod, it is the perfect tool for the job!

Superb tripod! All about choices...
I searched for the best tripod for the money, and everywhere I turned, I was pointed back to the Slik Pro 700DX. The only variance really had to do with the type of head. The tripod is extremely stable and easy to set up. This tripod can go extremely high or very low compared to other tripods. And, at all levels, it is stable. I say in the title that this tripod is all about choices... What I mean is that at this price range you can buy a lighter tripod and carry around sandbags to weight it down once its set up to ensure camera stability, or you can buy this rig. At either very high or very low settings, this tripod is stable in windy conditions without bracing the tripod. I never worried that my camera would be damaged from a gust of wind knocking my tripod over. The only negative I have has to do with the bag it comes with. I took this tripod on a trip to Petra and to photo Roman ruins in the Middle East. For travel, I have to recommend another case than the one this tripod came with. The case's handles only really allow it to be carried as a duffel bag, which gets tiresome over time. You can try to sling it over your shoulder, but this only works for a short time. You cannot throw it over your head to carry it diagonally on your back (without making choking sounds while trying to reverse what you just did to yourself...) The construction is solid, and the cushioned sections on the legs add to this feeling. They protect while remaining durable in their own right. The leg adjustments are easy to actuate but do not in any way feel cheap. They are strong plastic without any small pieces to break. They hold the legs in place. The panhead is nice. It is quick to adjust and has levels on two dimensions. I wish it had levels on three dimensions for use when using the camera in portrait mode. The panhead remains where you put it, with one small flaw. When you are trying to set it up, you have to get used to setting it slightly askew. Once you set it askew, as you tighten it, it settles slightly. In other words, set it slightly higher than level, and as you tighten it, it levels. It takes a little practice, but for the price, I can deal with this. (Some of my photos needed to be transformed by 2-3 pixels in post-production editing...) The camera I used on this trip was a Canon T1i with battery grip, two batteries, and a 18-200mm lens. The panhead never sagged, and the tripod never tilted due to this weight. I venture that this panhead/tripod combo can carry heavier lenses/rigs in both landscape and portrait without much problem. At this price range, you CAN NOT find a tripod close to the strength, durability, shot-flexibility and ease of setup than this tripod. And, you can make it portable...

My one photographic constant
I've owned this tripod for about six years now. In that time, I have moved from a 450D to a 5D Mark IV, from a kit lens to fast zooms and faster primes. I never once felt the need to upgrade my tripod. This thing is solidly built. The clamps holding the extending legs in place are very easy to use. What is extremely convenient is that I can extend one set fully, then use the center column to raise my camera to eye height for shooting. It is also extremely stable. A couple years ago, I took some early morning shots at Bryce Canyon. It was extremely windy at the time, but this thing held my camera solidly in place and I got very sharp shots. I have also accidentally knocked this when shooting and it is stable enough to where your kit won't easily tip over; it saved several thousand dollars worth of camera equipment from falling into Reflection Lake on account of my clumsiness when I was taking a morning photograph of Mount Rainier. The quick release plate is very securely held and won't move unless you want it to. It easily holds my 5D Mark IV and 70-200mm f/2.8 in portrait orientation. A quick release bushing will keep things in place if you accidentally forget to lock the release plate using the locking lever. Although I've never tried it, the center column can be reversed if you want to photograph with the camera close to ground level. The panhead has two bubble levels to help with alignment. I've found this tripod to be very portable. I've taken this with me to a good number of National Parks in the US, to Canada, England, and India. Whether I have driven, taken this tripod as a carry on, checked it in, or couriered it to my destination, it has happily taken these abuses. It has also lived in the trunk or floor of my car for months and been knocked around a good bit. And the only signs it shows of all these various adventures and scuffles are some paint scuffs on the pan head. There is not a single tear in the foam grip, and the manufacturer logo painted on to the foam is still legible. Recently, I had occasion to contact Slik's customer service by email for two issues - I needed help installing a ball head, and the locking plate was finally beginning to slip in the bracket in portrait mode with a heavy camera/lens. They responded to both emails within two hours with extremely helpful and very easy to follow instructions, and in the case of the issue with the locking plate, a detailed diagram showing how to adjust a tensioning wheel to keep the plate in place. I was considering a Manfrotto ball head, but was so impressed with the service that I purchased the Slik model. All in all, this is an extremely well built, easy to use, and very effective tripod. Slik also appears to be backing this with some excellent technical support. I simply could not recommend this more highly. Update - I have been using it now for long exposure astrophotography, which is about the most demanding application I can think of. Easy to mount something like an iOptron on it. Rock solid; takes a heavy counterweight, my 5D IV and a 70-200+1.4x extender with no problem. Attached photo is of M33 taken over 45 minutes.

Excellent Tripod!
Pros: Rugged. Sturdy. Dependable. Was confident to leave my Canon D70 with the EF 18-105mm kit Lens attached on it for hours! Extendable to a maximum height of 6' 2" (more than enough for my eye level 6'0",No more tilting my head down to look into the camera), with the central column it extends to 7' 4". NBA centers would love this tripod. The adequately sized leg ends, convey the confidence of stability. The Pan head comes with a fixing screw that is reversible for a large thread (3/8") or small thread (1/4"). You do not need to buy an adapter screw to use with a different size thread ball head. I did buy the Manfrotto adaptor for my Fancier ball head and realized that I did not need the Manfrotto adaptor after all.Plus shipping cost,It was a $16:00 error on my part. I simply reversed the end of the Pan Head screw thread from the 3/8" end to the 1/4" end and screwed the ball Head on it.The Manfrotto adaptor is in storage! Budget friendly for the build.Did not break the bank. Ecstatic looking.Sleek and Silky! Cons: The storage bag is not padded and will not protect your tripod from careless handling at the airport if you are to check it in. Having said that though, you can store the Pan Head and Handles in it, If you decide to replace Pan Head with a Ball head l like I did. So for that, I will not take away a star, as the bag still serves a purpose. Recommendation: Buy it Now! It deserves 10 stars. Very well made, but too heavy to be a travel tripod
The Slik Pro 700DX is a beautiful tripod. At a fully extended 74 inches, it is tall enough to allow you to shoot over heads in most crowd situations; Or you can lower it to 15 inches from the ground for macro shots. The head is easy to pivot and swing around and sturdy enough that, once set, it does not slip out of position. There is circular plate that can be removed with a quick release lever, screwed onto the bottom of the camera and then you can quickly mount or remove the camera as needed. There are also two fluid / bubble levels at right angles just under the camera mounting plate. Unfortunately, they are usually covered up once the camera is in place, so make sure your tripod is level before popping on the camera. The tripod is certainly heavy and sturdy enough that I feel no alarm when my expensive camera and more expensive lenses are mounted on the head. The only disadvantage I've found with this tripod is that when I'm on photo shoots in field I lack the upper body strength to lug around the heavy camera bag *and* the heavy tripod. I think a follow up purchase is in order - either a very lightweight aluminum tripod (under $50) or a highly padded, rolling camera bag (over $300). If the weight is not an issue for you, or you're using this in one place, then the Slik Pro 700 DX is a fabulous tripod!

Excellent, sturdy, adjustable, good fit & finish
This review is for the SLIK Pro 700DXQ AMT Tripod with 3-Way Pan & Tilt Head. I have been a photographer for a long time and have made do with cheaper and lighter weight tripods over the years. I just stepped up to a nice Sony RX10 Mark 4 camera, which is a little heavier than any of my previous cameras, and wanted a truly nice tripod to match. This unit definitely fits the bill. It is not a lightweight backpackable type although you could carry it with an improvised, over-the-shoulder and head loop sling if you wanted to. This is an extremely well designed and made product with excellent fit and finish. Boy does it feel sturdy. It does not flex and cause your camera to shake nearly as much as cheap tripods when you rest your hand on it to make adjustments or press the shutter. The separate pan and tilt handles are fantastic for adjusting the camera to either landscape or vertical portrait orientation. Despite what other reviewers say, let me assure you that yes indeed, there are two separate bubble levels underneath the head of the tripod that you can use to exactly level your camera. The quick detach adapter is a round puck with the standard 1/4 inch threaded stud that screws into the bottom of your camera. What I particularly like about the adapter is the large wing on the head of the screw that makes it easy to grab and turn on and off without needing a coin or a tool. The puck sits down into the head of the tripod and a very secure lever cam with locking button holds it in place. This arrangement seems very secure yet is easy to release. The legs telescope very smoothly and have very wide paddles with a secure feeling cam action that lock the legs to the length that you want. They open and close quite easily and although they are plastic, they seem to be properly engineered and beefy enough to be able to last a long time. The upper portion of each leg has a tight fitting tube of urethane foam that makes them quite comfortable to grab and keeps your hands from getting chilled in cold weather so you don't have to grab bare metal. The legs have molded rubber feet on their bottoms, that are non-marking and are secure on all surfaces I have tried. There are no sharp points that can be used as on other tripods and I have not missed having them. I am super impressed so far with Slik brand products. I also have their heavy duty monopod which is similarly well made and excellent.

Excellent tripod.
Its hard to do good work with a bad tripod. I've always used cheap tripods in the past, even when I worked for a school districts film department, they had terrible tripods. I highly recommend this tripod. I do professional photography, and the base/legs on this thing are some of the sturdiest I've ever used. Compared to some of the more expensive tripods, you get a lot of value with this one. I also do a lot of video work, and this head isn't very good for that. Pros: VERY Sturdy, made with "A.M.T." super titanium alloy legs. The Panhead is versatile Minimal plastic pieces, and the pieces that are made of plastic are really strong. The quick shoe is made from a strong metal material, and easily attachable. Removable head Independent leg movement. 3 position leg stand for getting low to the ground. The description says there is a Short Column available as an optional accessory, but I actually found that if you take the center column out, it unscrews in half turning it into a "Short Column" Tripod has an Inverting center column (which the description fails to state) The column, has a removable fixing screw Has 2 bubble levels on the Panhead for excellent leveling. Cons: Pan head a little stiff, consider getting another head for video work. The column doesn't have a weight hook, but there are accessories out there that let you add weight to a tripod, The tripod is sturdy, and heavy, so a weight hook isn't needed. A weight hook just would been a nice addition. The tripod doesn't fit in bag without having to take off one of the pan handles. It sticks out too far. For those who want to know Length folded: 760mm (29 11/12" Inches) Max. operating height 1,900mm (74 5/6" Inches) Max center column ext. 380mm (14 (11/12" Inches) Weight 3.45kg (7lbs 13oz) Max load 5kgs (11 lbs) Camera mounting screw size 1/4" Pan head fixing screw size (1/4") But is reversible to use a large 3/8" screw size.

High prasies for this item!
This tripod is without a doubt one of the finer tripods I've ever had the pleasure of using. Although its not suited for large format photography: I'd say any camera under 3 lbs and most lenses that aren't either really long or really heavy, will work perfectly. Unless I am trekking across rough terrain or long distances, I love the weight. If I need to climb a mountain to take a picture, I would consider taking another tripod. But the weight adds an insane amount of stability for HDR photography. You can search youtube for a video I've posted with a D200 and a 500mm lens (search "D200 penny test"); in the video, I place a penny on the barrel of the lens and snap a few pictures. The tripod is so heavy, the penny does not fall with multiple slaps of the mirror. Albeit its not a medium format camera, this does attest to the stability of the platform. The feet on the tripod are ball-joint hinged feet, with a bit of rubber grip. I shot in sand, and the tripod held well enough. I've shot on tile floor, and saw no slip. The legs extend to what I would say is "too far", but that's not a complaint. You simply don't have to extend the legs all of the way. I haven't used the tripod for shooting on a steep slope yet, but I am sure the excessively long legs will serve well. The head can pan, tilt, and shoot in portrait/landscape with incredible ease. The locking of the movements is quite sturdy, but in landscape I have seen some downward drift with a heavy lens. I've seen complaints with other tripods that screws are missing or loose, none of that applies with this item. The build is incredibly solid; most of the parts are aluminum, cast, stainless, or tough feeling plastic. The only part not of the previous materials is the foam padding at the top of the legs. This is nice, as cold weather and aluminum can be uncomfortable to handle. Included instructions say not to carry a camera on the tripod (like a hobo), but I feel completely comfortable doing so. The ONLY complain I have: it is a bit of a hassle to remove the pan head and invert the apparatus to the bottom of the tripod. I have yet to need to do so, but may in the future. This complaint is a two-sided coin: the extra effort required to remove the head also shows the solid build. If this tripod is ever lost or stolen, I will replace it with the exact same model. *update, 5 years in* This is still an amazing heavy duty tool. Nothing has worn out, it's still doing all I need. My only complaint: The carrying case is not easy to carry. A single adjustable strap would be much better so it could be worn across the chest. It's heavy, but heavier when you can't "wear it".

Very sturdy and versatile
I got this amazing tripod few weeks ago. It is very sturdy and cool hold up to 8Kg. Very tall and could go down quite low on the ground. Unfortunately, very heavy and if you don't have car you don't wanna carry it.

Great Tripod
I did a LOT of research before I settled on this model, indeed there's currently a review on you tube where you can see it set up which also helped. And in a seperate review listing it was among the top 4 listed pro tripods. I looked at all the major brands, the lower price bracket brands, and checked reviews on a number of sites. I have upgraded to a heavier DLSR and wanted to ensure the tripod was solid enough not to tip or give under tha camera weight. I also wanted a tripod that would be tall enough that I didnt have to bend down to look through the viewfinder. In addition I wanted to be able to change the head if I wished, and have plenty of options and not take out a mortgage to buy it ! This model is absolutely perfect, maybe a little heavy to take on a very long walk with you BUT fine for carrying in the car and shorter distance moving with it. Dont get me wrong its not unreasonably heavy as it needs the bulk to be sturdy. It wont let your camera down, will extend to over 6ft and has all the features I wanted. The quick release from Slik is also a very good feature. I cannot see me changing this one at anytime in the future and the price is good as it includes a sturdy head as well as the tripod - and a carrying bag too.

Love it for a bit of night photography!
I was thinking of getting into night photography to take pictures of the night sky (I live in an area with very low light pollution) so I did a bit of homework and settled on this SLIK PRO tripod. I'm ever so happy with it! It is so sturdy and I can feel secure to put my camera on it. Highly recommend it! Well worth the price!

VERY sturdy!
this is a solid tripod, and has a very high top end, which i have taken advantage of for video over the crowd... love that it is so solid, but is heavy enough that not sure about long hikes with it. but, who wants a flimsy, unstable tripod? not me. very well built it seems.
