Are these any different than the ball plastic storage caps? better/worse?

Are you talking about the white plastic lids for Ball jars? These are also Ball brand, just supposed to be "leak proof." I actually like these a fair bit better than the white ones, they definitely crank on tighter and feel more durable than the other ones. I haven't had any issues with leaking when bringing yogurt to work in my lunchbox with these, which I would have occasionally with the white ones. Time will tell if they last as long, but I would say they're at minimum as good as, if not slightly better than, the other kind.

what makes these grey ones different from the Ball plastic lids that are white?

These have a small plastic lip on the inside at the top of the lid which is supposed to act as a sort of "flange" to help make the lid leak proof. So you can put liquid in it, crank the lid on real tight, flip it upside down, and not have it leak everywhere. Otherwise, they're functionally the same if you don't need the "leakproof" function.
